As the Arizona Wildcats touched down in Tucson early Sunday morning, they were greeted by a sea of passionate fans surrounding McKale Center, eager to welcome their team home. The Wildcats, fresh off their victory in San Jose, are savoring the support but remain focused as they prepare for their national semifinal clash against Michigan in Indianapolis.
Coach Lloyd, speaking on Tuesday, is keeping things grounded. "Another normal week," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of maintaining routine and focus.
Lloyd's approach is intentional; he’s staying out of the limelight to keep his head in the game. "I don’t think feeling any different will help me do my job better this week," he added.
This marks Arizona's first Final Four appearance since 2001, but it's familiar territory for Lloyd. He’s been here before, twice with Gonzaga, and he knows the magnitude of the stage.
His message to the team is clear: this is a business trip, not a field trip. "The Final Four is an event for the fans, but we’re the participants," Lloyd explained.
"We need to treat it as such."
Lloyd is emphasizing the importance of staying in the moment and doubling down on their strengths. "The competition is formidable, but sticking with what got you here is the best formula," he advised.
While the team focuses on the court, Lloyd is also managing external distractions. Rumors have swirled about his potential move to North Carolina, but Lloyd is unwavering in his commitment to Arizona.
"This team has my full focus," he assured. "Nothing is knocking me off that path."
In Indianapolis, basketball takes center stage, but Lloyd will also pause to honor his mentor, Mark Few, as he is introduced into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Reflecting on his journey, Lloyd reminisced, "No one ever talked about being in the Hall of Fame, or even going to the Final Four back in the day."
As the Wildcats gear up for their showdown with Michigan, Lloyd’s experience and focus are set to guide them through the high-pressure environment of the Final Four. With the support of their devoted fans and a clear game plan, Arizona is ready to make its mark.
