Arizona State has added one of the most productive freshman guards in the country, landing Portland transfer Joel Foxwell after a monster 2025-26 season that put him on the national radar.
Foxwell arrives with a résumé that matches the buzz. The major recruiting services all viewed him as a consensus four-star transfer prospect, with On3 ranking him No. 106 overall among transfers and No. 20 at point guard. 247 Sports placed him No. 117 overall and No. 20 at the position, while CBS Sports slotted him as the No. 17 point guard transfer prospect.
What made Foxwell such a coveted name was the sheer volume of production he delivered for Portland. He earned First Team All-WCC honors in 2025-26, becoming the only Pilot freshman besides Greg Anthony in 1987 to make the All-WCC First Team. He also picked up All-WCC Freshman Team recognition, and he was Portland’s first First Team All-WCC selection since 2015-16 - only the second in the last 15 years.
Foxwell’s numbers tell the story. He averaged 15.6 points, 6.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds while logging 35.7 minutes per game.
He set Portland’s single-season assists record with 221 in 34 games, and his 529 points were the most ever by a freshman in program history. He became just the 15th player in school history to score 500 points in a season.
He also made his mark in the WCC awards race, winning Freshman of the Week seven times, the most in the conference. Along the way, he posted 11 games with at least 20 points, recorded five double-doubles and handed out 10 or more assists six times.
On a national level, Foxwell was one of only three players - along with Northern Colorado’s Quinn Denker and CSUN’s Josiah Davis - to average at least 15.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists. He led the WCC and ranked 13th nationally in total assists with 221, while his 6.5 assists per game also ranked 13th nationally and stood as a program record. He finished sixth in the conference in scoring.
Foxwell’s playmaking peak came when he tied a school record with 15 assists in a game, and he reached that number twice last season. That made him one of just four players in the country with four 15-assist performances, joining Jeremiah Fears, Josiah Davis and Donovan Dent.
He was efficient at the line too, shooting 80.7% on free throws, going 96-for-119 to finish ninth in the WCC. Defensively, he piled up 50 steals and had 15 games with two or more, which ranked fifth in the conference.
Foxwell also earned national and league recognition on Feb. 9, when he was named Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week and WCC Player of the Week. That came after one of the best all-around performances in Portland history, a 27-point, four-rebound, eight-assist outing in a win over No.
6 Gonzaga on Feb. 4.
He played 39 of 40 minutes and shot 61.1% from the field in what was the highest-ranked victory in program history.
