Arizona State opened its 2027 class with a big one on Wednesday, landing Carson Crawford, a national top-75 small forward from Fleming Island High School in Orange Park, Florida.
Crawford, listed by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 50 overall prospect and the No. 13 small forward in the class, said yes on Sunday, right after getting back home from his official visit to Tempe. Once he made up his mind, he shut things down and canceled his other planned official visits.
The Sun Devils won out over Florida State, Ole Miss, Providence and Syracuse to secure the commitment.
“Sometimes it's just, when you know, you know,” Crawford said. “I'm really big on family.
And I feel like this team is a great family and I'm really big on community. I grew up at a smaller school, but great community, and I'm really big on community, and I heard ASU is a great community, so I'm excited to get into it and be a part of it.”
Crawford said people have compared his game to former NBA great Scottie Pippen, especially because of the way he affects the game on the glass and on defense.
“I feel like I've all around, all around player,” he said. “I feel like if the coach needs something, I can feel much about any any role.
I can defend, rebound. You know, the offense comes with it.
That's my biggest strong shoot. My defense and rebounding.
I'm athletic. So I feel like all that kind of are my strengths.”
The fit went beyond basketball for Crawford. He pointed to ASU’s academics, the campus and the overall environment as major reasons the decision came together so quickly.
“School wise, like, I want to go do business and sports management, the number to the nation, the number one in the nation for innovation, I thought they just, like, the community is great,” he said. “This campus is beautiful.
I couldn't even picture better campus in my head. Basketball wise, I feel like the coaching stuff is just amazing stuff.
They have a lot. They're brand new there and they have great plans, great things going for them and the head coach is very experienced.
“And then basketball-wise, I just feel like not only do the coaches and especially Randy Bennett know what they're talking about, but he knows what he wants to do. And I feel like that with his resume and his in the situation, he's at ASU now at a better school.
I feel like he can really make that happen. It really just checked all the boxes.”
