Thompson Leads 4x400 Squad to Another Big Finish in Texas

With standout performances from freshman Amir Thompson and a dominant 4x400 relay win, Arizona State continues to build momentum in a strong indoor season showing at the Charlie Thomas Invitational.

Sun Devils Shine in College Station as Amir Thompson Makes History

The Arizona State track and field squad just wrapped up its third indoor meet of the season, and if this weekend's performance at the Charlie Thomas Invitational in College Station is any indication, the Sun Devils are heating up at just the right time.

Headlining the action? Freshman sprinter Amir Thompson - and he didn’t just win, he made history.

Thompson blazed through the men’s 200m dash in 20.62 seconds, securing first place and etching his name into the Sun Devil record books. That time now stands as the second-fastest indoor 200m in program history, trailing only Domenik Peterson’s 20.43 from 2005.

Not bad company for a freshman still settling into the collegiate circuit.

Here’s how the top of the all-time ASU indoor 200m list stacks up now:

  1. Domenik Peterson (2005) - 20.43
  2. Amir Thompson (2026) - 20.62
  3. Justin Robinson (2022) - 20.81
  4. Kaleb Simpson (2024) - 20.81
  5. Denzell Feagin (2024) - 20.83

Thompson’s early-season form is turning heads. This weekend’s 200m win is his second victory of the year - he also took the top spot in the 300m at the Corky Classic back in January with a time of 32.29. For a freshman, he’s not just showing promise - he’s setting the tone.

But Thompson wasn’t done. He anchored the Sun Devils’ 4x400 relay squad to another first-place finish.

The quartet of Jayden Davis, Mateo Medina, Dayton Carlson, and Thompson crossed the line in 3:05.08, marking their second relay win of the season. The chemistry in that group is real, and the results are speaking for themselves.

Jayden Davis also continued his strong individual campaign, grabbing second place in the men’s 400m with a time of 32.00. He’s been a steady force for ASU this season, and his consistency is giving the team a reliable presence in the sprints.

On the field side, graduate thrower Ines Lopez delivered a personal best in the shot put, launching 16.51m (51-2) to take second place. That’s now two meets and two runner-up finishes for Lopez, who’s building momentum with each outing.

The men’s shot put group also delivered. Graduate Brandon Lloyd threw 19.00m (62-4) to secure second, while sophomore Preston Beery wasn’t far behind, taking third with a mark of 18.07m (59-3 1/2). That one-two punch gave ASU a strong presence in the circle and valuable points on the board.

With athletes across the board stepping up - from sprinters to throwers to relays - the Sun Devils are showing they’ve got depth, talent, and a whole lot of upside as the indoor season rolls on. If this weekend was any indication, Arizona State is a team to keep an eye on as the championship meets start to loom.
