Turning Point
The Sun Devils found themselves in a tight 1-1 contest early on, but things took a decisive turn in the bottom of the fourth inning. It all started with a Roellig single, setting the stage for Dean Toigo to blast his third home run in as many games, giving ASU a 3-1 advantage.
The momentum kept rolling with doubles from Dominic Smaldino and Beckett Zavorek, tacking on another run. And just when you thought the fireworks were over, Landon Hairston stepped up and launched a two-run homer, marking ASU's 13th half-inning this season with at least five runs.
Talk about making a statement.
Big Moment
The Sun Devils faced a scare when Arizona clawed back with a three-run shot, cutting the lead to 6-4 in the top of the sixth. Enter Sean Fitzpatrick, the captain who delivered a career-best performance when his team needed it most.
Fitzpatrick threw 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, matching the longest outing of his career. He struck out four, allowed just one hit, and issued no walks, putting the brakes on Arizona's comeback attempt.
Final Straw
While Fitzpatrick held the fort, the Sun Devil offense kept the pressure on. Hairston singled, swiped second, and scored on a Moutzouridis RBI single, stretching the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
Smart base running added another in the seventh, with Smaldino scoring from second on a two-out error, all thanks to Brody Briggs' hustle. The nail in the coffin came in the eighth with Roellig's two-RBI single up the middle, sealing a 10-4 victory.
Derek Schaefer closed it out in the ninth, shaking off a leadoff single and stranding two runners with a pair of strikeouts.
Austen Roellig has been on fire since stepping up as a pinch runner after Nu’u Contrades' early exit due to injury. In just eight at-bats, Roellig has racked up six hits, scored six runs, and added three RBIs, reaching base or driving in a run in nearly every appearance. His performance has been nothing short of clutch for the Sun Devils.
