Sun Devil Gymnastics Heads to Morgantown for Big 12 Clash with West Virginia
Arizona State Gymnastics is back on the road this weekend, heading east for a Big 12 showdown against West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The meet is set for a 4 p.m. MST/6 p.m.
EST start and will stream live on ESPN+. Fans can also follow along with live scoring on Virtius and get real-time updates via @SunDevilGym on X and @sundevilgymnastics on Instagram.
The Sun Devils are coming off a hard-fought meet against No. 18 Denver, where they posted a 195.875 in a narrow loss. While the result didn’t swing their way, there were plenty of bright spots-especially from the younger athletes stepping up and veterans continuing to lead with consistency.
Freshman Making Her Mark
Safia El Mammann is starting to find her rhythm at the collegiate level. Against Denver, she tied her season best on vault with a 9.850-good enough to earn her first collegiate event title. For a freshman still adjusting to the pace and pressure of NCAA gymnastics, that’s a major confidence boost and a signal that she’s a name to watch as the season unfolds.
Veteran Leadership from Smith and Lee
Senior Kimberly Smith continues to be the cornerstone of this Sun Devil squad. She’s been a rock in the all-around, competing in every event at every meet so far this season.
Last time out, she delivered a well-rounded performance: 9.875 on both floor and beam, and solid 9.825s on bars and vault. She’s already posted an all-around score of 39.400 or better twice this season, showing the kind of consistency coaches dream about from a senior.
On beam, Kayla Lee has been the tone-setter in the lead-off spot. She’s scored at least a 9.825 in that role every meet this season-no small feat when you’re the first one up and setting the stage for the rest of the lineup.
Last week, she tied her season high on beam with a 9.850 and matched that score on floor, setting a new season best in that event as well. Her ability to deliver under pressure continues to be a stabilizing force for ASU.
Bars Trending Up
There’s also been noticeable progress on bars. Against Denver, the Sun Devils posted a season-high 49.025, with four of the five counting scores hitting 9.800 or better. That kind of depth and scoring potential on bars could be a game-changer as they move deeper into conference play.
Scouting the Mountaineers
West Virginia enters the meet coming off a second-place finish in a recent tri-meet, where they scored a 194.775-just behind Western Michigan but ahead of Northern Illinois. The Mountaineers are still looking to find their footing this season after finishing last year with a 4-14 record and going winless in Big 12 competition. They did make it to the first round of the Pennsylvania Regionals but were eliminated by Maryland.
History on ASU’s Side
The Sun Devils hold a 3-2 edge in the all-time series against West Virginia. The last time these two teams met was in Tempe, where ASU edged out a 196.225 to 195.825 victory in a tightly contested meet. This time, it’s the Mountaineers who have home-floor advantage-but if recent performances are any indication, the Sun Devils are bringing plenty of momentum with them to Morgantown.
With key athletes hitting their stride and the team showing signs of upward trajectory, Saturday’s meet offers another chance for Arizona State to solidify its standing in the Big 12 and continue building toward postseason form.
