Sun Devil Track & Field Heads to College Station with Momentum and Depth
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After a two-week break, Arizona State Track and Field is back on the road and ready to make some noise at the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. The two-day meet, taking place February 6-7 at the R.A. “Murray” Fasken ’38 Indoor Track, marks the next stop in what’s shaping up to be a promising 2026 indoor campaign for the Sun Devils.
And if their last outing is any indication, this team is starting to hit its stride.
At the Corky Classic in Lubbock, Arizona State put together a strong showing, highlighted by a pair of standout wins from its sprinters. Freshman Amir Thompson turned heads in the men’s 300m, blazing to a first-place finish in 32.29.
That’s the kind of debut performance that puts a freshman on the national radar. Right alongside him, junior Jayden Davis showed his experience and poise in the men’s 600-yard, clocking a winning time of 1:07.92.
But it wasn’t just the top of the podium where ASU made its mark. Graduate thrower Ines Lopez delivered a personal best in the women’s shot put with a throw of 16.28 meters (53-5), good for second place.
That kind of progression from a veteran athlete is exactly what you want to see as championship season creeps closer. Meanwhile, freshman Malith Yasiru continued to impress in the men’s triple jump, leaping 15.65 meters (51-4¼) to secure another second-place finish.
In total, 18 Sun Devils landed inside the top 10 in their events at the Corky Classic, and eight of them earned top-three finishes. That’s not just depth-it’s consistency across the board.
Now, with 38 athletes set to compete this weekend in College Station, Arizona State is bringing a full squad to Texas. The team’s mix of young talent and experienced leaders gives them a versatile edge, and the Charlie Thomas Invitational offers another opportunity to sharpen up before the championship portion of the schedule kicks in.
Lopez will be one to watch again in the throws, continuing what’s been a strong start to her season. And with Thompson and Davis both coming off wins, the Sun Devils’ sprint group is gaining momentum at the right time.
Looking ahead, the road only gets tougher-and more exciting. After College Station, ASU heads to Albuquerque for the Don Kirby meet, then back to Lubbock for the Big 12 Indoor Championships at the end of the month. The NCAA Indoor Championships follow in March, with the outdoor season kicking off shortly after.
But for now, all eyes are on this weekend. With confidence building and performances trending upward, the Sun Devils are stepping into College Station with something to prove-and the talent to back it up.
