Ohio State Already Faces Pressure In Chase For Elite 2028 Quarterback

As the competition heats up for top high school talent, Oregon emerges as the frontrunner in the race to land elite quarterback prospect Josiah Boyd, a dynamic Southern California star with a penchant for making plays.

College football’s 2028 quarterback chase is already taking shape, and Josiah Boyd is sitting right at the center of it.

The consensus four-star from Southern California has quickly become one of the most watched names in the class, and early signs point to Oregon as the program with the strongest pull. The Ducks got in early, with QB coach Koa Ka’ai visiting Boyd’s high school to watch him throw and extending an offer on May 1. Boyd’s reaction left little doubt about where things stand.

“Oregon has always been my dream school,” the quarterback said, adding that Dan Lanning’s program already had the lead in his recruitment.

That interest has not been casual. Boyd has reportedly been on multiple visits to Oregon already, and the relationship with the staff appears to be growing fast. At this stage, the Ducks have clearly set the pace.

The main challengers trying to keep up are Ohio State and Arizona State. The Buckeyes entered the picture with an offer in June, and they already bring plenty of recruiting firepower to the table. Ohio State owns the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2028 cycle, with three commitments that include No. 4 overall prospect and top ranked wide receiver Jett Harrison.

Arizona State made its move even earlier, offering Boyd in May of last year. Kenny Dillingham also met with him in person, giving the Sun Devils an early foothold in the race. Even so, they’ll have to do a lot of work to stay in it.

For now, this looks like a Ducks-versus-Bucks battle long term.

Boyd’s production backs up the hype. As a sophomore last season, he threw for 2,620 yards, 19 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions. He also added 462 rushing yards and another reported nine touchdowns, showing off the kind of dual-threat profile that makes quarterbacks like him so valuable.

The national rankings reflect that upside, even if the services don’t all agree on where he belongs. Rivals has him as the No. 2 quarterback in the 2028 class, 247Sports lists him 10th, and ESPN has him at No. 5.

Using an industry-weighted average, Boyd comes out as the No. 5 quarterback in the class, the No. 4 prospect in California and the No. 62 player in the country.

Colorado Just Lost A Receiver Arizona State Fans Will Love

Colorados offseason portal churn is already reshaping the roster, and the Buffaloes are taking hits at several premium spots. The list of departures includes a five-star tackle, a safety, a cornerback and a running back, the kind of turnover that forces a staff to keep reworking depth charts while trying to plug holes before the next season arrives.

For Arizona State fans, the most intriguing name in that group is the receiver Colorado is losing, because the Sun Devils are the team that benefits from the move. In a Big 12 race where every experienced playmaker matters, adding a proven pass catcher while a conference rival keeps retooling is the sort of portal swing that can matter well beyond one roster move.
