Cam Skattebo Just Gave ASU Fans A New NFL Debate

Former Sun Devil Cam Skattebo's crucial overtime fumble set the stage for a jaw-dropping, error-laden finish in the Giants' dramatic tie with the Commanders.

Former Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo had a finish he probably won’t forget anytime soon, and it came in one of the strangest overtime sequences you’ll ever see.

Skattebo had helped push the New York Giants’ final overtime possession forward with three straight runs of at least five yards, only to cough up the ball in a 27-27 game and give the Washington Commanders new life. From there, it looked like Washington might have the door wide open.

What followed was even more chaotic.

The Commanders, with former ASU quarterback Jayden Daniels and former Sun Devil running back Rachaad White involved in the backfield, moved all the way to the New York 24-yard line and appeared set up for a winning field goal. But Washington had no timeouts left, and in the scramble to get lined up and spike the ball, the clock expired. The game ended without another snap, finishing in a 27-27 tie.

Afterward, FOX announcer Chris Myers summed it up this way: "Skattebo says I'll take the tie and get out of town," after a day that featured more than one overtime miscue.

For Skattebo, the result came in just his second NFL overtime game. It also added another uneasy layer to what has been a bumpy stretch in his second pro season.

Through 10/12, Skattebo has 294 yards on 81 carries with one rushing touchdown. He has also caught 10 passes for 79 yards. His year, and the Giants’ offense more broadly, has taken a hit since the season-ending injury to starting quarterback Jaxson Dart.

That loss, paired with an offensive line that has struggled in run protection, has made life difficult for Skattebo and the rest of the backfield.

Still, the fumble in overtime was a harsh reminder of the balancing act in his game. Skattebo has never been shy about lowering his shoulder and fighting for extra yards, but he acknowledged afterward that the margin for error shrinks fast in those moments.

"At the end of the day, I have to take care of the ball," New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo said. "I gotta hold on to the ball and make sure these guys know that when my name's called, we're gonna be okay."

He added: "I’m the player who tries to fight for as many yards as possible for this team," Skattebo said after the tie. "It kind of bit me in the ass there.

I've got to make sure I protect the ball for this football team. We win that game if I do.”

That leaves a bigger question hanging over his early NFL career: how much of the punishing style that made him who he is can survive at this level without turning into a turnover problem? Skattebo had never had more than three fumbles in a college season, but he already has four fumbles in five games in 2026.

He was candid about the answer he may need to find.

"I think in that situation what I think I could do differently is try not to get the extra yards because we’re already in a good position and continue to take care of the ball," Skattebo said. "If I get tackled for a loss at one yard, then I get tackled for a loss at one yard."

The Giants return home to face the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 18.

Former Sun Devil Just Created A New Reason For ASU Fans To Watch Detroit

Keith Abney is giving Arizona State fans another reason to keep one eye on Detroit. The former Sun Devil defensive back, now a rookie with the Lions, picked up his first NFL interception in a win over the Arizona Cardinals and added six tackles and a pass deflection in the same game, a strong all-around showing against the team from his home state.

Dan Campbells comments afterward only sharpened the interest around Abneys place in Detroits plans moving forward. For Sun Devil fans, the appeal is easy to see: a recent ASU product is already making real plays on Sundays, and if his role continues to grow, his name could become a familiar one in a hurry. Kenny Dillingham's Message Kept ASU's Win From Feeling Like Enough

Arizona States 30-12 win over Hawaii gave the Sun Devils a cleaner-looking Saturday, and the return of offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo to playcalling helped make it look that way. Freshman running back Cardae Mack powered the offense with 154 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while the defense settled in enough to hold Hawaii to 12 points after a rougher outing the week before.

Even with those signs of progress, Kenny Dillingham did not let the result feel like a finish line. His message after the game was centered on improvement, not comfort, as the Sun Devils tried to turn one solid performance into the kind of consistency that can hold up once the schedule gets more demanding. Kenny Dillingham Put Arizona State On Notice Before Texas Tech

Kenny Dillingham didnt sound interested in easing Arizona State into the conversation ahead of a trip to Lubbock. At his Monday press conference, the Sun Devils coach pointed to the challenge of facing No. 10 Texas Tech on the road and made clear he views the matchup through the same lens as every other one on the schedule: Arizona State is supposed to expect to win.

Dillingham also framed the game as a test of edge as much as execution, praising Texas Tech while stressing the need for his own team to bring more passion and relentlessness. He said the Sun Devils have to sharpen their intensity on the field, a reminder that the margin in a tough road environment can disappear quickly if they start flat. [Read more 🡒]
