LONDON - Wembley Stadium has seen its share of games turned by a few decisive kicks, and Saturday’s Union Jack Classic fit right into that tradition.
ASU’s 24-17 win over Kansas was shaped from start to finish by special teams. A field goal opened the scoring, a punt return answered back, a bad punt set up a touchdown, a kick return flipped the game early in the second half, and a late punt pinned Kansas deep in its own end. By the end of the night, special teams had either scored, created, or surrendered nearly all the damage on the scoreboard.
The first points came on ASU’s opening drive, when Carson Smith drilled a 39-yard field goal. Kansas answered in the second quarter with a 72-yard punt return from Tate Nagy, and that made it 7-3 until the final moments before halftime.
Then came the swing that changed everything. With 29 seconds left in the half, Kansas was forced to punt from deep in its own territory.
Matt Gill’s kick traveled just 17 yards to the Jayhawks 25, and ASU quickly turned that mistake into points when Cutter Boley hit Reed Harris for a touchdown. That gave the Sun Devils a 10-7 lead at the break.
The second half opened with the play that will stick in the memory of the night. ASU wide receiver Jaren Hamilton fielded the kickoff and raced 100 yards for a touchdown, stretching the lead to 17-7. Hamilton, who stopped running track in high school to focus on football full-time, leaned into the speed that’s followed him everywhere.
“I lean into it,” he said. “I trust my speed and you can see what it does.”
Dillingham called the sequence that produced those two quick touchdowns a major turning point.
“It was huge,” Dillingham said. “Fourteen points swing there.
That was critical in the game. We needed every point.”
ASU’s special teams kept shaping the game from there. A Kansas missed field goal in the third quarter preserved the Sun Devils’ 17-7 cushion heading into the fourth, and both teams later added a touchdown. With a little more than five minutes left, Nick McLarty finished the day’s special-teams work by punting Kansas back to its own 1-yard line.
In all, 20 of the 41 points at Wembley came directly from special teams, while seven more were created by special teams and three were lost because of special-teams miscues.
McLarty, an Australian native, delivered nine punts for 382 yards and drew strong praise from Dillingham.
“Nick did an absolutely phenomenal job tonight,” Dillingham said. “He’s fun to watch.
That guy’s energetic. He’s got passion for the game.”
Hamilton’s return was the headline play, and it made him the first Sun Devils player to score a kick-return touchdown since D.J. Taylor did it in ASU’s 70-7 victory over Arizona in 2020.
Hamilton said the setting at Wembley hit him right away, and the feeling only got stronger as the second half began. He even sensed the return coming.
“I called it,” Hamilton said. “I said, ‘If they kick this ball to me and it doesn’t go out the back of the end zone, I’m gonna run it back.’”
The big play also brought Hamilton back to his track days. He called track his “baby,” and said the run reminded him of that part of his life.
“I was the person on the team that, if you wanted to make it to states in a certain event, put me in,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton wasn’t the only Sun Devil to turn a big play into a memorable moment. ASU lineman Hyrum Vaeono, who weighs 305 pounds, returned a fumble 77 yards to the 1-yard line, a run that drew plenty of attention in its own right.
Still, Vaeono pointed back to the special teams group as the unit that really drove the night.
“Shout out to those guys,” Vaeono said. “Big-time players, big-time players. I’m not surprised that (Hamilton) did, but it was big.”
