Arizona State will be without junior offensive lineman Wade Helton for a stretch after he picked up a lower-leg injury in Saturday’s 48-20 loss to No. 9 Texas A&M.
Head coach Kenny Dillingham said after Tuesday’s practice that Helton is expected to miss “a few weeks.” The injury happened in the second quarter when Helton came up grabbing at his ankle after a screen pass.
He was helped off without putting weight on his right leg, then carted to the locker room. When he came back out, he was on crutches and wearing a boot on his right foot.
Helton, a former Iowa State transfer, had been working through preseason camp without looking fully healthy. He and sophomore lineman Rob Lapuaho were competing for first-team snaps at right guard, and Helton got the start in ASU’s season opener against Morgan State while Lapuaho rotated in.
With Helton sidelined, Lapuaho is now the likeliest full-time starter at right guard. He handled the spot after Helton left the Texas A&M game.
“Rob did a good job of just coming in there and doing his job,” fifth-year offensive lineman Jalen Klemm said. “Coach (Saga Tuitele) prepares a bunch of guys to be able to go out there and play.
At the end of the day, you have to be ready for that opportunity, and there shouldn't be a fall-off from one guy to the next. I think that Rob just has to continue to be locked in mentally and go out there and play fast.”
Helton also had been serving as ASU’s backup center. He slid over when junior center Tana Alo-Tupuola briefly left Saturday’s game for a few plays. Alo-Tupuola had started seven games for ASU in 2025 after starting center Ben Coleman suffered a season-ending arm injury.
Senior offensive lineman Makua Pule worked as the second-team center throughout preseason camp and is likely to take over Helton’s backup role behind Alo-Tupuola.

Kansas already has no margin for error after the loss to Missouri, and the timing of the next test could hardly be more awkward. The Jayhawks now head to the Union Jack Classic at Wembley Stadium in London to face Arizona State, with their bowl hopes hanging on a game they really need to have as they try to keep their record in the right range for postseason consideration.
The challenge is bigger than one trip overseas. Kansas still has a schedule dotted with difficult road games and not many home chances left to steady things, which means every missed opportunity can snowball fast. ASU Fans Have Plenty To Debate After One Brutal Loss And One Rout
After a tough fourth quarter turned a competitive game into a 48-20 loss to Texas A&M, Arizona State fans had plenty to sort through on the football side. Two pick-sixes by quarterback Cutter Boley helped swing the afternoon, even as senior wide receiver Reed Harris gave the Sun Devils a bright spot with two touchdowns and 189 receiving yards.

The volleyball team bounced back from its home loss to UC Davis with wins over Oregon and San Diego, powered by strong play from Noemie Glover and Una Vajagi, while the soccer team put together a record-setting 8-0 rout of Grambling State on Senior Night, with multiple seniors getting on the scoresheet.
