The first Big 12 availability report of the season landed with plenty to sort through for Arizona State and Kansas, and the early read is clear: both teams are dealing with more than a few moving parts heading into Saturday’s Union Jack Classic.
For the Sun Devils, the biggest names on the list are tied to the offense. Tight end AJ Ia and wide receiver Omarion Miller both showed up on the report, and each carries real weight in ASU’s passing game.
Ia, listed at 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds, already flashed in the opener against Morgan State with two catches and a touchdown. Miller, the former Colorado standout and preseason pick to break out for ASU, is coming off a quieter outing against Texas A&M and is looking for a reset.
Those two injuries matter because they shape how much firepower quarterback Cutter Boley has to work with, and how effective that group can be if those players are limited.
But the more pressing concern for Arizona State may be in the trenches. Offensive linemen Tana Alo-Tupuola and Luke Baklenko are both on the report as probable, and both have started every game so far for ASU.
That comes after Wade Helton went down with a lower leg injury against Texas A&M and left on crutches. Kenny Dillingham said in London that Helton will miss a few weeks, though the injury is not season ending.
That development hits a unit that already showed cracks in College Station. ASU’s second-half collapse was fueled in part by pressure up front, including the play where the Aggies tipped Boley’s pass into the air and turned it into a 55-yard pick six. That mistake ended up sealing the Devils’ fate.
If more starters in the offensive line rotation are unavailable, the pressure on this offense grows fast.
Kansas’ first Big 12 report brings its own list of concerns, starting with linebacker Bam Crouch. The Boston College transfer looked like an immediate difference-maker after opening against Long Island with two tackles and a sack, but he left that game early with a shoulder injury.
He missed the Missouri game and remains questionable for Week 3. With a defense that gave up 38 points last week, the Jayhawks could use him back.
The offense is also dealing with uncertainty. Wide receiver Cam Pickett and tight end Carson Bruhn are both listed as questionable alongside Crouch. Like Ia and Miller for ASU, both have already played important roles early this season.
Kansas also has two quarterbacks on the injury list in Cole Ballard and Jaylen Mason. Ballard stands out most, since he is Kansas’s QB2. The redshirt junior was hurt late in the Missouri game on a trick play, and while the injury does not appear to be season ending, it is expected to keep him out in England.
With Ballard and Mason likely unavailable, junior Chase Jenkins is next in line. He entered the year as QB3 behind Ballard and starter Isaiah Marshall.
