Arizona State’s men’s basketball team may have kept things quiet, but Colorado State gave away enough clues to suggest the Sun Devils hosted a secret scrimmage in Tempe on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The Rams’ men’s basketball account on X posted that Colorado State was in Desert Financial Arena for a preseason workout, writing, “A little preseason business in Tempe.”
From there, the breadcrumbs started piling up. Arizona State never posted about the scrimmage, and there was no public score or update from a national insider such as CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. That left the college basketball world doing what it always does with these October tune-ups: trying to piece together the story from whatever scraps surface online.
The video clips from Colorado State’s account appear to point toward a Rams win, though that comes with the obvious caveat that the only public evidence is coming from CSU’s side. One scoreboard visible behind a clip showed Colorado State leading 17-16 with about 35 seconds left in the first period before Rams forward Eric Fiedler knocked down a three to push the margin to 20-16.
Another posted clip showed a successful pick-and-roll that added two more Rams points and stretched a 14-12 Colorado State lead to 16-12. In those clips, ASU guard JRob Croy and center Ben Defty were shown defending the action, while Fiedler also hit a three over Sun Devils forward Ajak Nyuon.
The matchup also featured a familiar coaching storyline on the Colorado State side. Ali Faroknmanesh, the former Northern Iowa guard and March Madness icon, took over as head coach in 2025 and is entering his second season. It is also the program’s first year in the new PAC-12.
The Rams are coming off their first season under Faroknmanesh, which mirrors the transition Arizona State is in now.
Faroknmanesh and Randy Bennett crossed paths before when Faroknmanesh was an assistant at Saint Mary’s. Their schools met four times from 2020 to 2024, with each side winning twice.
For Arizona State, the secret scrimmage is just the warm-up act. The Sun Devils now turn to their official preseason tune-up, a trip to Albuquerque for an exhibition against the New Mexico Lobos on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Arizona State Suddenly Has A Quarterback Decision It Can't Ignore
Arizona States quarterback picture got a lot murkier in the middle of a rough night against Texas Tech, when junior Cutter Boley threw two interceptions, including a pick-six, as the Sun Devils fell behind in a hurry. Head coach Kenny Dillingham turned to sixth-year quarterback Mikey Keene at halftime, and the switch immediately gave the offense a different look.
Keene responded by throwing for 256 yards and two touchdowns in the second half, enough to make the move impossible to ignore as Dillingham heads into the next stretch of the season. The coach said he would evaluate the position moving forward, and after a game like this, Arizona State has a decision looming that it can no longer treat as routine. [Read more 🡒]
Arizona State Gets Another Huge Chance In A Place That Haunts Fans
Arizona State gets another crack at one of the tougher spots on its schedule on Oct. 31, when it heads to Provo, Utah, to face No. 2 BYU. The Sun Devils are sitting at 3-3 and trying to steady their season, while the Cougars come in fresh off a high-profile win over Notre Dame and carrying one of the nations best rankings into kickoff at 1:30 p.m. MST on FOX.
The matchup also brings back plenty of history between the programs, with Arizona State still ahead in the all-time series but BYU having taken the recent meetings. For Sun Devils fans, the trip to Provo has a way of stirring old memories, and this one arrives with even more weight given where BYU stands now and what ASU is still trying to prove in the second half of the season.
