No. 8 BYU had to earn every inch of this one, but the Cougars did just enough late to turn back Arizona State 27-20 on Saturday in Provo, Utah.
Bear Bachmeier led the way for BYU with 236 passing yards and a touchdown, and the Cougars improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12. Arizona State, meanwhile, dropped to 4-4 and 2-3 after falling to a Top-10 opponent on the road for the third time this season.
The game flipped in the fourth quarter, after Arizona State had clawed all the way back to tie it in the third. Matthias Dunn pushed BYU back in front with a 45-yard field goal early in the final period, and Sione Moa finished the job with a 1-yard score with 2:09 remaining. Bachmeier kept that drive alive by converting two fourth downs on Moa’s second rushing touchdown of the game.
Arizona State still had one last push left. Carson Smith drilled a 44-yard field goal with 57 seconds to go, trimming the margin to seven, but his onside kick was recovered by BYU to end the threat.
Moa’s night was a little bit of everything. He recovered Bachmeier’s fumble at the goal line and turned it into a 1-yard touchdown for the Cougars’ first score, then later added the clincher. Bachmeier’s touchdown pass came in the first half, when he threaded the ball through traffic to Kyler Kasper for a 13-yard score that helped BYU build a 17-3 halftime cushion.
That early lead was built on a defense that smothered Arizona State before the break. BYU allowed just 93 yards in the first half and piled up six sacks before halftime.
Arizona State’s offense finally found some rhythm after the break. The Sun Devils moved the chains on three third downs during their third-quarter surge, capped by a 20-yard touchdown catch from Omarion Miller that pulled them within one score. Then came the turnover that set up the tie: on BYU’s third play of the next drive, Owen Long stripped the ball from Kasper at the BYU 39, Adrian Wilson recovered, and Arizona State quickly cashed in with a 1-yard touchdown catch by Anthony Miller Jr. to make it 17-17.
Cardae Mack was Arizona State’s biggest playmaker, finishing with 170 all-purpose yards and 123 rushing yards. Jake Fette, making his first career start, threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns, though his day began with a costly mistake. On Arizona State’s opening drive, the true freshman fumbled while being sacked, and Isaiah Glasker recovered at the Sun Devil 29.
BYU took advantage six plays later, and Legend Glasker led all players with 87 receiving yards.

Arizona States Quarterback Decision Just Got A Lot More Complicated
A freshman debut in a tight Big 12 game can tell you a lot about a quarterback, and Jake Fettes first start against BYU gave Arizona State plenty to weigh. Thrown into his first college game, Fette finished 22 of 42 for 166 yards and two touchdowns, taking multiple sacks along the way as the Sun Devils tried to settle in around him. Even with the rough opening stretch, he helped keep ASU in the game before the late result slipped away.
The bigger wrinkle for the Sun Devils is what comes next, because Fette was not the only freshman making program history. He and running back Cardae Mack became the first freshman quarterback and running back duo to start a game in ASU history, a notable milestone even in a loss that dropped the Sun Devils to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play. With the season now at a crossroads, the quarterback decision only gets more layered from here. [Read more 🡒]
