Arizona State added another major piece to its 2027 class on Monday, landing Howard Williams, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound power forward from Dynamic Prep in Dallas.
Williams is the Sun Devils’ second top-50 commitment in the class, coming in just under three weeks after his official visit to Tempe. At the time of his pledge, he was ranked No. 44 overall and No. 8 among power forwards in the 247Sports Composite. In 247Sports’ own rankings, he checked in at No. 53 overall and No. 9 at his position.
The commitment gives ASU back-to-back big wins on the recruiting trail. On August 29, the Sun Devils picked up Carson Crawford, the No. 50 overall prospect and No. 13 small forward in the class according to 247Sports. With Williams on board, Arizona State landed two top-50 recruits in the same cycle for the first time since the 2024 class, when Jayden Quaintance and Joson Sanon committed to the program.
Williams said the Sun Devils’ consistency was a major factor in his decision.
"They showed the most consistency recruiting me," Williams told 247Sports. "I love the coaches, the environment on my visit; I just love everything about it. They checked all the boxes.
"I was around the team a lot, so I saw how they spent their every day. I saw James Harden.
He came back to play the guys in a scrimmage. They have good culture there and a brotherhood.
It was amazing."
He also described what Arizona State can expect once he arrives.
"They can expect someone who's going to work hard every day," Williams told 247Sports. "Someone who's going to get better and better and obviously wants to win. A really hard competitor."
247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein called Williams an "imposing physical presence with a solid size, powerful frame, broad shoulders and a long 7-foot wingspan."
Finkelstein also noted that Williams has "natural hands, dexterity, and can be a functional offensive piece at various spots on the floor."
The addition is expected to push Arizona State up to fifth nationally and third in the Big 12 in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. Iowa State’s three-man class is ranked first overall, and Houston’s two-man class - which also includes two top-50 national recruits - sits fourth overall.
Williams said the Sun Devils made it clear how they see him fitting in right away.
"They see me coming in as that guy and being able to play as a freshman," Williams said of the Sun Devils. "Those two things were very important in making my decision.
