Soroka Shines in Spring Showing
Michael Soroka delivered an impressive performance Thursday night, showcasing his skills in a scoreless five-inning outing against the White Sox. Despite the Diamondbacks falling 4-2 at Camelback Ranch, Soroka's efforts were a highlight, marking his return to Cactus League play after representing Canada in the World Baseball Classic.
With Merrill Kelly starting the season on the injured list, the Diamondbacks' rotation is shaping up. Manager Torey Lovullo is still finalizing the order, particularly where Eduardo Rodriguez will fit in after his stint with Venezuela in the WBC. The rotation will feature Zac Gallen as the Opening Day starter, followed by Rodriguez, Ryne Nelson, Brandon Pfaadt, and Soroka.
Soroka, who threw 70 pitches-48 for strikes-will next take the mound in Arizona’s final exhibition game against the Guardians. This aligns him for a spot towards the back end of the rotation.
Outfield Decisions Loom
In the outfield, Corbin Carroll is expected to start in right field as he recovers from a hand issue. The bigger question is who will play center and left. Alek Thomas and Jordan Lawlar are the main contenders, with Lawlar, originally a shortstop, gaining experience in center field during camp.
Lawlar has been alternating between left and center, while Thomas has been showcasing elite defensive skills in center according to team metrics. Manager Lovullo is still weighing his options for the Opening Day lineup.
“I love it though they're running balls down out there," Lovullo said. "They're going out there and playing solid defense.
Who gets the start in center or left? I haven't yet figured that out."
As the Diamondbacks gear up for the season, these decisions will be crucial in setting the tone for their campaign. With Soroka's strong arm and the dynamic outfield duo, the team is poised for an exciting start.
