Ketel Martes Status Suddenly Feels Bigger For The Diamondbacks

Amidst a critical stretch of the season, the Diamondbacks are left hoping for a swift return of their star player Ketel Marte following a knee injury against the Braves.

Ketel Marte’s night against the Braves ended early, and now the Diamondbacks are treating his left knee soreness as a day-to-day issue.

Arizona’s second baseman left Friday’s 2-0 win over Atlanta after the first inning, when he tried to field a ground ball from leadoff hitter Drake Baldwin, twisted awkwardly as he turned to throw to first and couldn’t finish the play. Baldwin reached on an infield single. Marte stayed in long enough to finish the inning, but he did not come back out after that.

The soreness wasn’t brand new. Manager Torey Lovullo said Marte had been dealing with the problem since Arizona’s series against the San Diego Padres last week, and the first-inning sequence against Atlanta made it worse. Lovullo also said Marte would not need testing and that the club hoped to get him back on the field soon.

Marte did get one plate appearance before exiting, and it was a loud one: a 103 mph lineout against Braves starter Chris Sale. After he left, Arizona shuffled its defense, with Ildemaro Vargas moving from first base to second, Tim Tawa shifting from center field to first base and Jorge Barrosa coming into center.

Marte was considered a game-time decision Saturday, but he was not in Arizona’s lineup for the middle game of the series at Truist Park.

The three-time All-Star is hitting .251 with a .763 OPS this season. He leads the Diamondbacks with 21 home runs and 68 RBIs and has played 95 games at second base. He also came into Friday having collected seven hits over his previous four games, including two homers, before the knee issue forced him out.

D-Backs Made A Telling Roster Move With The Wild Card Tight

The Diamondbacks are still operating in full postseason mode, and Mondays lineup against the Braves reflected that urgency. With Arizona tied with the Phillies and Padres for the second wild-card spot and sitting at a 53.2% playoff probability, every roster decision carries a little extra weight, especially this late in the season. Ketel Marte returned to the lineup after a day off, giving the club its usual middle-of-the-order presence back as it tries to keep pace in the race.

Arizona also shuffled its roster before first pitch, removing Abner from the 40-man roster and bringing Santana onto it. Those kinds of moves can look minor on the surface, but in a tight wild-card chase they usually say something about how the front office sees the margin for error. Michael Soroka is expected to pitch without any pitch count restrictions, another sign the Diamondbacks are treating this stretch like every inning matters. [Read more 🡒]

Torey Lovullos Future Just Raised The Stakes For Arizonas Stretch Run

The Diamondbacks push for the postseason now carries an extra layer of meaning beyond the standings. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Torey Lovullo is in the final year of his contract, and there have not been extension talks as Arizona tries to hold onto its spot in the playoff race. For a club with its current position looking anything but secure, the stretch run has become about more than just a October berth.

Lovullo has been the steady face of the dugout in Arizona, but the uncertainty around his future is hard to miss this late in the season. If the Diamondbacks finish the job, the conversation changes quickly. If they do not, the organization may be facing a major decision about the manager as soon as the season ends. [Read more 🡒]
