Ketel Martes Diamondbacks Absence Just Got Even More Confusing

The Arizona Diamondbacks have shifted their approach by placing Ketel Marte on the injured list, opting to pay him amid his mysterious absence and knee issues.

The Diamondbacks are changing course with Ketel Marte.

After three days on the restricted list, Marte is set to be moved to the 10-day injured list, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic on Thursday, Aug. 20. That switch means Marte will begin accruing salary again while he works back from the knee issue that first surfaced when he was pulled from Arizona’s Aug. 14 game with left knee soreness.

Marte had already sat out Saturday before returning Sunday, but his situation took a strange turn when he was a no-show for Monday’s game in Boston. The absence created confusion for fans and concern inside the clubhouse, and Marte soon went back to Phoenix for an MRI on his knee.

What followed was, in effect, a three-day paid suspension before the Diamondbacks allowed him to move into injury status. Players on the injured list are paid; players on the restricted list are not.

It’s another unusual twist for a three-time All-Star whose absences have already caught teammates off guard before. This marks the second time in the last two years Marte has landed on the restricted list.

Marte’s agent, Charisse Espinosa-Dash, told Jon Morosi of MLB Network that Marte is “currently managing a personal matter and will be undergoing an MRI on his knee (Thursday). Ketel appreciates the unwavering support from fans, teammates, the Diamondbacks organization, and Torey Lovullo during this time,” she said. “He remains optimistic about his recovery and looks forward to returning to the field to contribute to the team as soon as possible.”

According to Piecoro, general manager Mike Hazen met with Marte earlier Thursday and expects him to rejoin the club once he’s healthy.

That meeting came only after team president Derrick Hall said on a Phoenix radio station earlier in the day that Hazen had requested time with Marte, though at that point the two had not yet met.

Arizona’s decision to pay Marte suggests the team has accepted the “personal reason” behind his sudden disappearance and no longer wanted to keep his salary withheld.

Even so, the biggest question remains unanswered: why Marte didn’t let the team know he couldn’t play Monday before it reached that point. He may have explained that privately to Hazen. Fans, though, may never get that answer.

D-Backs Add Infield Depth As Bigger Question Starts Looming

The Diamondbacks have added another layer of infield insurance, signing Santiago Espinal to a minor league contract and sending him to Triple-A Reno. Espinal had been on the market since his release by the Texas Rangers in late July, and he now gives Arizona a veteran utility option after spending time this season with both Texas and the Dodgers.

For a club already juggling injuries and uncertainty at second and third base, the move fits the moment even if it does not settle the bigger picture. Espinals arrival gives the organization another experienced name to lean on in the minors, while the more pressing question remains how Arizona sorts out the infield before the situation demands a more permanent answer. Diamondbacks Need A Reset As New Tension Hangs Over Reds Series

The Diamondbacks head into a three-game set with the Reds looking for a reset after a run of uneven results, and the pitching matchups give the series a little extra weight. Eduardo Rodriguez opens it for Arizona against Nick Lodolo, while the rest of the rotation picture includes Michael Soroka, Mitch Bratt and Andrew Abbott, a mix that reflects how much both clubs are trying to find a rhythm at this point in the season.

For Arizona, the broader concern is not just one night or one arm, but how quickly the group can steady itself against a Cincinnati team that has also slipped in the NL Central. The Reds have not been able to sustain their early push, and the Diamondbacks know this is the kind of series that can either help them regain traction or deepen the tension around a stretch that already feels heavier than the standings might suggest.
