Diamondbacks Starters Struggle In Spring Raising Fan Concern

As the Arizona Diamondbacks brace for the regular season, fan concerns mount over their pitchers' rocky spring performances, putting early pressure on the team's starting rotation.

As Spring Training wraps up and Opening Day looms large, Arizona Diamondbacks fans find themselves scrutinizing the state of the starting rotation. Right-hander Michael Soroka’s recent outing against the Cleveland Guardians didn’t exactly inspire confidence.

In just 3.1 innings, Soroka surrendered 10 hits and six earned runs, including a pair of homers. His spring stats tell the tale: a 7.50 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP over 12 innings.

But Soroka isn’t alone in his struggles. Arizona’s top starters, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, also faced challenges this spring.

Together, this trio posted a combined 9.29 ERA over 28.3 innings, with a 2.15 WHIP. For a team that’s banking on pitching stability, these numbers raise eyebrows among the fanbase.

While preseason stats aren’t always indicative of regular-season performance, they do reveal some troubling trends, particularly in terms of hard contact and inconsistent command. Elevated WHIPs and earned run totals suggest traffic on the bases and little margin for error, which can quickly unravel games once the season kicks off.

Spring Training is generally a time for players to build strength and fine-tune mechanics. However, after two years of inconsistency from both the rotation and the bullpen, fans are understandably anxious about missing another postseason due to pitching woes.

It’s important to keep things in perspective, though. Less than 30 innings of preseason work might not paint the full picture of these pitchers’ capabilities.

Short-term results often don’t translate into a full season’s narrative. The Diamondbacks are counting on the experience and adaptability of their staff to make the necessary adjustments when the games start to matter.

With the season opener against the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the D-Backs’ rotation will face an immediate test. Fans are hopeful that the team’s trajectory will shift positively once the regular season begins.
