Diamondbacks Roster Shakeup Puts One Immediate Arenado Question Front And Center

The Arizona Diamondbacks are strategizing for a crucial stretch with key player returns and roster adjustments defining their game plan against the Boston Red Sox.

The Diamondbacks made a flurry of roster moves, and the biggest name back in the mix is Juan Martinez. It has been more than a year since he last pitched in the majors - June 9, 2025 - but he’s finally back after four rehab outings that pointed in the right direction.

Martinez’s rehab line was hard to ignore: 13 batters faced, one hit allowed, and 12 outs, including six strikeouts. He also reportedly touched 102.4 mph in one of those appearances, so the velocity looks intact. Arizona will be happy to have him available again, even if Carrillo could surface again soon, possibly when rosters expand in two weeks.

Jordan Lawlar is also back after a shorter, but still frustrating, absence. He’s been out for just under two months with a hamstring issue, his second IL stint of the year.

Earlier, he missed two months because of a broken wrist, then returned for barely a week before getting hurt again. At the time of that latest setback, he was hitting .316 with an .856 OPS in 44 plate appearances, and the hope now is that he can pick up that form and stay on the field.

Another player who could be part of the picture in September is Locklear, whose season has been a clear step forward. In 42 plate appearances, he posted an .806 OPS, a big jump from what he did over his first two seasons.

Not every move was about adding. Hoffman lost his spot on the 40-man roster after coming over from the Royals for Randal Grichuk at the 2025 trade deadline.

The results never really followed, with a 6.08 ERA at Reno and a 7.71 ERA over 11.2 big-league innings. He also hasn’t pitched in more than two months, with a lat strain keeping him out since June 5.

The one development Arizona is probably watching closest, though, is the one that didn’t happen. Nolan Arenado is still on the roster despite a strained trunk, and that’s a good sign for the Diamondbacks.

Gambo reported that Arenado “may try to grind through the injury.” He isn’t in the lineup today, but he should be available off the bench if needed.

Diamondbacks Suddenly Lose Ketel Marte In A Situation Fans Didn't Expect

A sudden roster shakeup left the Diamondbacks scrambling around second base after Ketel Marte was placed on the restricted list and Jose Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A to take his spot. The move came in the middle of a series against the Red Sox, turning what should have been a routine lineup decision into something much more complicated for Arizona, since a player on the restricted list is not paid and does not accumulate MLB service time until he returns.

The timing made the situation especially jarring for a club trying to keep its focus on the field. Marte had been expected to be available against Boston, and Arizona had to pivot quickly to cover the infield without him. For now, the Diamondbacks are left managing the baseball side of the issue while the bigger question around Marte hangs over the team. [Read more 🡒]

Diamondbacks Clear Space As Recent Pitching Addition Nears Abrupt Exit

A roster shuffle around the pitching staff brought a familiar name back into the picture for Arizona, as Justin Martnez is set to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list. To make room, the Diamondbacks moved right-hander Andrew Hoffmann off the 40-man roster, a sign of how quickly bullpen and depth-chart decisions can turn when a healthy arm is ready to return.

Hoffmann, who came over from the Royals more than a year ago, had already been on the minor league injured list when Arizona made the move, and his major league stint never really got off the ground. Because he is still injured and the trade deadline has already passed, the next step is more complicated than a normal outright assignment, leaving his status in a different kind of limbo as the Diamondbacks clear space and sort out the back end of the roster. Diamondbacks Hit An Infield Scare At The Worst Possible Time

A late-August loss already had enough weight attached to it, and the Diamondbacks got a little more bad news in the middle of Sundays 5-3 defeat to the Braves. Gabriel Moreno and Ildemaro Vargas each went deep in the series finale, but the more pressing development came when Nolan Arenado exited in the fourth inning with left trunk discomfort and Vargas slid over to third base in his place. With Arizona trying to keep pace in a crowded stretch of the season, any infield scare carries a little extra anxiety.

Arenados exit only adds to the kind of moving pieces the club has had to manage around the roster, and the timing is far from ideal. The Diamondbacks also made a transaction, selecting Dennis Santana and designating Philip Abner for assignment, a reminder that the bench and bullpen are getting adjusted even as the lineup takes on more uncertainty. For a team trying to hold together its everyday core, the next update on Arenado may end up mattering a lot more than the final score did. [Read more 🡒]
