The Diamondbacks are moving on from Jesus Sanchez, designating the outfielder for assignment before today’s game against the Padres, manager Torey Lovullo told MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert and other reporters after Friday’s 11-4 win.
The roster shuffle is tied directly to Gabriel Moreno’s early exit on Friday. Moreno left with what Lovullo called a “ tender ” left hamstring, and Arizona needs a catcher on hand for today’s game. Lovullo said Moreno is expected to play today as the designated hitter, which suggests the injury is not considered serious.
Moreno’s night ended after he scored from first base on Geraldo Perdomo’s bases-clearing double in the top of the sixth. James McCann then took over behind the plate before the bottom of the seventh.
McCann is expected to start today at catcher, with the incoming Triple-A backstop serving as his backup. Gilbert expects Adrian Del Castillo to be the call-up, and Del Castillo is already on the 40-man roster. That made Sanchez the most expendable piece, especially with Moreno now set to fill the role Sanchez had essentially occupied as a DH-only option.
Sanchez’s time in Arizona was brief and quiet. He managed only two hits in 16 plate appearances with the Diamondbacks, doing little to help a club that has struggled against right-handed pitching. For the season, his line now sits at a 99 wRC+, down from the 105 wRC+ and .260/.318/.416 slash line he posted in 299 plate appearances with Toronto.
His best work came early with the Blue Jays. Since then, the production has fallen off hard.
Over his last 111 trips to the plate with Toronto and Arizona combined, Sanchez hit just .168/.279/.253. He also missed about a month with a sprained right ankle and struggled defensively in Toronto’s outfield, which led the Blue Jays to designate him for assignment earlier this month.
Arizona took the chance on a waiver claim, hoping a change of scenery might unlock something.
That never really happened, and with only two games left in the regular season, there’s no real market left for another claim. Sanchez will very likely clear waivers and be released, since the Diamondbacks are hardly eager to give him a raise on his $6.8MM salary for 2026. He’s arbitration-eligible for the third and final time this winter, but this move should send him into free agency early, likely with minor league offers as he looks to reset.
