The Diamondbacks are keeping a close eye on catcher Gabriel Moreno, who was scratched from tonight’s Spring Training game against the Royals due to forearm tightness. Manager Torey Lovullo assured reporters, including Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports, that the issue seems minor and mainly affects Moreno when throwing.
An MRI is planned as a precaution, but given Moreno's injury history, the team is proceeding with care. Over recent seasons, Moreno has dealt with a left shoulder issue, thumb and adductor strains, and a broken right index finger.
When healthy, Moreno shines as one of MLB's top two-way catchers, boasting a .285/.353/.433 line at the plate and a stellar defensive reputation. His arm has been a standout, throwing out 30% of basestealers in his career.
With Moreno out, non-roster invitee Aramis Garcia steps in for tonight's game. Garcia is expected to start the season in Triple-A unless Moreno’s condition requires an injured list stint.
In that case, James McCann would likely take on the primary catching duties. Adrian Del Castillo, another catcher on the roster, is sidelined with a left calf strain and will start the season on the 10-day injured list.
In other news from camp, Arizona's outfield plans are taking shape. Corbin Carroll made a return as a designated hitter after surgery for a hamate fracture in his right hand. Carroll is optimistic about being ready for Opening Day and aims to reclaim his spot in right field.
Jordan Lawlar is making waves in his bid for the center field job. The former top prospect is hitting .323 with four homers in 37 plate appearances.
Despite being new to the outfield, Lawlar has logged significant time in center this spring. Lovullo praised his performance, hinting at more time in the corner outfield as well.
While Lawlar remains an emergency shortstop option, the D-Backs see his future in the outfield, especially after acquiring Nolan Arenado for the infield.
Lawlar’s bat seems set to secure him a spot on the Opening Day roster, likely in center field. Alek Thomas is expected to cover left field until Lourdes Gurriel Jr. returns from an ACL tear. Meanwhile, prospect Ryan Waldschmidt, hitting .257 with 11 strikeouts in 37 plate appearances, is likely headed to Triple-A Reno.
On the mound, Merrill Kelly is making his Spring Training debut after back soreness delayed his start. While this setback means Kelly won’t start on Opening Day, there’s hope he’ll be ready for the early regular season. Zac Gallen, meanwhile, is lined up for his fourth consecutive Opening Day start.
Corbin Burnes, though still months away from returning, hit a significant rehab milestone after last June’s Tommy John surgery. As reported by Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic, Burnes threw a promising 15-pitch bullpen session, reaching 91 mph with his fastball, exceeding his expectations for this stage of recovery.
