The Diamondbacks are sending rookie outfielder Tommy Troy to the 10-day injured list with an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder, and the move is retroactive to July 12.
Arizona did not announce a corresponding roster move, and that likely won’t come until Friday, when the club opens a key series against the Cardinals.
The timing matters here. Injured list moves are uncommon over the All-Star break, but Troy’s placement was handled on an off day because it could be made retroactive.
IL stints can only be backdated three days, and Troy’s last game action came on Saturday. That means he’ll be sidelined for at least the first six games after the break.
Troy had been holding down a regular spot in the outfield while Jordan Lawlar was back on the injured list. With Troy out, Arizona is expected to lean on a Max Kepler and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. platoon, while recently recalled top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt gets an everyday run next to Corbin Carroll for the next couple weeks.
The Diamondbacks enter the second half 2.5 games out in the Wild Card race, and if they’re buyers at the deadline, outfield help should be on the table. That would be true even if Troy were healthy, given his .223/.299/.364 start in the majors.
There are other issues in the lineup, too. Waldschmidt has also struggled in his first look at big league pitching, neither Gurriel nor Kepler is hitting, and Lawlar has once again missed most of the season. First base stands as the clearest offensive need, but Arizona also needs at least one outfield upgrade.
The front office may have to look at the rotation as well. That wasn’t supposed to be part of the plan, but injuries have already taken out Ryne Nelson, Zac Gallen and Michael Soroka. Gallen went on the shelf a week ago with elbow inflammation, and general manager Mike Hazen told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com that the club is monitoring the market for pitching help.

Smith does have the option to elect free agency, but he is expected to accept the assignment and head to Reno as the Diamondbacks try to help him rediscover the form that has been missing since his return from left elbow inflammation. The Diamondbacks are turning back to Tyler Locklear at a time when they need answers more than ever, recalling the first baseman from Reno after a strong run in Triple-A. Acquired from the Mariners last year in the Eugenio Surez deal, Locklear has been productive this season, hitting .313 with eight home runs and 37 RBIs, enough to put him back in the mix as Arizona works through a string of injuries.
For Locklear, the move marks a second chance to show he can help at the big-league level after his season was cut short in 2025.
