DENVER -- The Diamondbacks kept themselves in the postseason picture Wednesday night, and they did it by taking advantage of a Rockies mistake early and letting their bullpen do the rest.
Arizona scored four unearned runs in the first inning after Colorado left fielder Zac Veen committed an error, then held on for a 5-3 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.
That result mattered beyond the box score. The Diamondbacks could not be eliminated, and with the Phillies’ and Cubs’ losses, Arizona moved to within three games of the third National League Wild Card with four games remaining. The path is still tight, but it remains open.
The schedule ahead gives Arizona one more crack at Colorado before a final three-game set in San Diego against the Padres this weekend. The Phillies have one game left with the Brewers before finishing at home against the Rays, while the Cubs have one more against the Marlins and then three in Boston against the Red Sox.
Arizona’s formula Wednesday looked a lot like what manager Torey Lovullo has leaned into all year: get the starter through as much as possible, then turn it over quickly. Merrill Kelly, who had given up just two runs, was pulled after a one-out, broken-bat single in the sixth.
The offense did just enough once the door cracked open. Gabriel Moreno and Nolan Arenado each delivered RBI singles in the first, and Corbin Carroll added a two-run triple to cap the inning and give Arizona the cushion it needed.
