The Diamondbacks made a roster move on Tommy Troy, and it cost Jorge Barrosa his spot.
Arizona reinstated Troy from the 10-day injured list and designated Barrosa for assignment in the corresponding move. Barrosa, an outfielder, now goes into DFA limbo with his future tied to waivers.
Barrosa, 25, originally signed out of Venezuela in 2017. He entered pro ball with a reputation for speed and defense, and scouts also liked his switch-hitting approach at the plate, even if the power never really showed up. The Diamondbacks added him to the roster in November of 2022 to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft.
Since then, most of his time has been spent in the minors. From 2023 through 2025, he used up all three of his option years while posting underwhelming results with Triple-A Reno.
Over those three seasons, he logged 1,325 plate appearances for the Aces, walking 13.1% of the time and striking out 18.3% of the time. The on-base skills were solid, but the punch never matched the hitter-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League: he hit 29 home runs and finished with a .279/.377/.437 line, good for a 97 wRC+.
His big league chances have been limited, but he had stayed on the major league roster for all of 2026 until this move. Across his MLB career, Barrosa has 254 plate appearances, with a 6.3% walk rate, a 26% strikeout rate, and a .180/.241/.302 line. That adds up to a 49 wRC+, and the Diamondbacks have clearly run out of patience with the bat.
Because the trade deadline has already passed, Arizona will have to put Barrosa on waivers. His offense may not draw much interest, but there is at least some appeal on the defensive side.
In 623 2/3 innings in the outfield, mostly in center, he has been credited with six Defensive Runs Saved and 11 Outs Above Average. A team could still decide the glove is worth a look and hope the bat develops later.
If no club claims him, Barrosa would remain with the Diamondbacks as non-roster depth. He has not had a previous career outright and is still short of three years of big league service time, so he would not have the ability to elect free agency.

The Diamondbacks are finally close to getting a major piece back in the middle of a season where every rotation turn has mattered. Corbin Burnes is expected to rejoin Arizonas starting staff Tuesday against the Royals, putting him in line for his first start of the 2026 season after a long recovery from Tommy John surgery and a shoulder strain.
