PHOENIX - The Diamondbacks got the kind of injury update that can calm a dugout in a hurry.
After Jordan Lawlar was forced out of Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs when he was hit by a pitch, manager Torey Lovullo delivered a reassuring report. Lawlar passed all concussion protocols and was removed only as a precaution, according to Arizona Sports’ Alex Weiner. Lovullo also said Lawlar is expected to play in Wednesday’s game.
The scare came in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Lawlar stepped in against Cubs reliever Daniel Palencia. Palencia accidentally sent a 98.5 mph fastball toward Lawlar’s head, and the pitch hit him while also breaking the flap of his helmet, which seemed to take some of the force. Lawlar stayed down for several moments before eventually walking off the field under his own power.
Given how the play unfolded, the first concern was obvious: whether Lawlar had suffered a serious head injury. Lovullo’s update eased that fear.

The news mattered even more because Lawlar had only recently come back from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for two months. Arizona had just gotten him back into the mix, and losing him again would have been a brutal blow.
This was also not Lawlar’s first hit-by-pitch issue of the season. Earlier this year, he fractured his right wrist after being hit by a pitch and missed additional time on the injured list.
This time, though, it appears he avoided another major setback. If nothing changes overnight, Lawlar should be back in the lineup Wednesday as the Diamondbacks continue their series with the Cubs.
Arizona also finished the night with a walk-off win an inning later, a result that helped them gain ground in the National League wild-card race and move to just one game behind the San Diego Padres. Lawlar’s speed, defense and bat remain important pieces in that push.
For now, though, the biggest takeaway is simple: Lawlar, the Diamondbacks and their fans can breathe a little easier.
