The Diamondbacks cleared a 40-man roster spot by designating right-hander Andrew Hoffmann for assignment, a move that also paves the way for Justin Martínez to come off the 60-day injured list.
Hoffmann, 26, came to Arizona from Kansas City just over a year ago in the deal that sent outfielder Randal Grichuk to the Royals ahead of last year’s deadline. Since then, the Diamondbacks have mostly shuttled him on optional assignment.
His major league track record remains limited. Between the Royals and Diamondbacks, Hoffmann has thrown 23 2/3 innings in the big leagues and allowed 6.85 earned runs per nine. The strikeout, walk and ground-ball numbers haven’t helped his case either: 20% strikeout rate, 15% walk rate and 32.4% ground ball rate.
There has been more to like in the minors, though this season hasn’t followed that path. In 2025, his first year working full-time out of the bullpen, Hoffmann posted a 3.19 ERA over 42 1/3 innings in Triple-A. His 31.7% strikeout rate, 7.2% walk rate and 54.2% ground ball rate were all strong marks.
This year began with Hoffmann in the majors, but he struggled and was optioned before April ended. In Triple-A, he put up a 6.07 ERA with a 16.9% strikeout rate and 13.8% walk rate over 13 1/3 innings before landing on the minor league injured list in June with an undisclosed ailment. He was moved to the 60-day IL in July and was still there when Arizona made this transaction.
Because injured players can’t be placed on outright waivers and the trade deadline has already passed, Hoffmann will need to go on release waivers in the coming days.
