Corbin Burnes is finally nearing a return, and the Arizona Diamondbacks are getting the kind of update that matters twice over: first for the stretch run, and then for the long view.
Burnes is projected to rejoin the rotation on Tuesday, September 8, after Tommy John surgery wiped out most of his 2025 season and a setback delayed his comeback into late 2026. The Diamondbacks have gone without him all year through September 6, but that absence is about to end.
The bigger issue, though, is what happens after this season. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the expectation around the league is that Burnes will not walk away from his current contract.
“The D-Backs will be cautious with him, knowing he still has four years, $140 million remaining on his contract, but his return could be a boost for their playoff hopes the final three weeks,” Nightengale writes. “Burnes' return also gives teams a free look at him if Burnes really wanted to take the massive gamble and exercise his opt-out, but teams are fully expecting him to stay in Arizona.”
That opt-out exists, but it would be a major gamble for a pitcher who has missed most of 2025 and 2026 because of Tommy John surgery. The source points out that a $35 million-per-year contract on the open market would be a long shot under those circumstances, and if Burnes were to test free agency, the likelier outcome would be a shorter prove-it deal rather than another major payday.
Burnes remains in the second year of a six-year, $210 million contract, and the expectation is that he stays put. He’s a four-time All-Star and former Cy Young winner, but even with that resume, the risk of opting out now is described as too steep.
For Arizona, the immediate news is his return to the mound. The larger news is that the Diamondbacks are not expected to lose him this winter.
