Brandon Pfaadt Suddenly Looks Like A Different Arm Against Dodgers

After a transformative stint in Triple-A, Brandon Pfaadt's revamped performance is a game-changer for the Diamondbacks.

Brandon Pfaadt’s return from Triple-A Reno has changed the look of the Diamondbacks’ rotation, and Saturday night in Los Angeles was the latest proof.

The right-hander worked 5 1/3 innings, allowed two runs, didn’t issue a walk and struck out two as Arizona rolled past the Dodgers 9-2 at Dodger Stadium. Pfaadt was in control early, retiring 15 of the first 17 hitters he saw, and he carried a shutout into the sixth inning against the majors’ second-highest scoring offense.

Since coming back to Arizona on June 30 with altered mechanics and a sharper mindset, Pfaadt has gone 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA over three starts. That’s a sharp turnaround from the stretch before his demotion, when he was 0-1 with a 5.92 ERA and had been moved to the bullpen.

Arizona’s offense made sure the lead never felt shaky. For the second straight night, the Diamondbacks hung nine runs on the board to support their starter.

James McCann powered the attack with two home runs, including a three-run blast off Yoshinobu Yamamoto that helped break the game open. Nolan Arenado also went deep, and Tim Tawa kept rolling with a 3-for-5 night that included two doubles and two RBIs.

The game stayed tight until the Diamondbacks blew it open with a five-run sixth against Yamamoto. Arizona was up 1-0 before Max Kepler added a sacrifice fly, Tawa delivered an RBI double and McCann followed with the three-run homer that pushed the margin to 6-0.

Diamondbacks Just Made A First Round Pick Fans Will Debate

The Diamondbacks used their first-round pick on Ryder Helfrick, a catcher from Arkansas whose profile is built on defense first and upside behind the plate. In a draft class where opinions on him are all over the map, Helfrick has drawn praise for his glove, his arm and the kind of power that can make a catcher more than just a bat-control project.

Arizonas choice fits the kind of debate that tends to follow a first-round selection with a wide range of evaluations. Helfrick is viewed by some as one of the safer defensive bets at the position, but the questions about his contact ability and pitch recognition are real enough to keep the conversation going, especially for a club trying to balance present needs with long-term value. D-Backs Just Made A No. 15 Bet Fans Will Obsess Over

The Diamondbacks used the 15th pick in the 2026 MLB Draft to add another intriguing name to their catching pipeline, taking Arkansas backstop Ryder Helfrick. The right-handed hitter arrives with the kind of profile teams dream on at that position: real power, a reputation for handling the game behind the plate and enough polish to make him look like more than a long-term project.

Helfricks stock was built on more than tools. He tied for the Cape Cod League lead with 11 home runs in 2024, then kept producing for Arkansas while also handling a spotlight moment in the College World Series, when he was behind the plate for a no-hitter. Ranked among the top prospects in the class, he gives Arizona a player who could develop into a regular major league catcher, even if the final steps in that progression are still ahead. Diamondbacks Bring Back Kids Free Weekend For Arizona Families

The Diamondbacks are rolling out their annual Kids Free Weekend again, giving Arizona families another reason to circle a summer homestand at Chase Field. The promotion is set for the July 17-19 series against the St. Louis Cardinals and is designed to make the ballpark feel especially welcoming for younger fans, with the club continuing to lean into family-friendly experiences as part of its broader effort to build long-term connections.

Children 15 and younger can receive up to two free tickets with the purchase of an adult ticket, a straightforward offer that fits the teams push to keep baseball accessible. For the D-backs, it is about more than filling seats for one weekend - it is about getting kids through the gates, around the ballpark and into the habit of coming back. [Read more 🡒]
