As the Utah Mammoth gear up for a potential playoff run, their transformation from last season's disappointment is turning heads across the NHL. With a current record of 31-24-4, they sit comfortably in the top wildcard spot of the Western Conference, and their sights are set on the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
General Manager Bill Armstrong is not resting on his laurels. In a recent conversation, he emphasized the relentless pursuit of improvement.
“We wake up every morning looking to make our team better,” Armstrong stated. “We’re never going to stop trying to improve.
I think we’re going to evaluate like everybody else and see if there are hockey deals out there.”
Armstrong is clear about his strategy: “For us, where we’re at right now, rentals don’t make a lot of sense. We did a lot of our depth building in the summer, putting a lot of the pieces in place. But, like I said, if there’s a hockey trade to be made to make us better, we’ll definitely look at it.”
The Mammoth have been on a roll, winning 12 of their last 17 games. Their recent 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild, who had just toppled the league-leading Colorado Avalanche, highlights their current form.
With 12 of their remaining 23 games at the Delta Center, where they boast an 18-9-2 record, the Mammoth are in a prime position to control their postseason fate. Salt Lake City fans have plenty to be excited about as the team pushes for playoff action.
The trade deadline looms, and many teams are still weighing their options. Armstrong acknowledges the tight race: “There’s still more information out there for us.
Teams are waiting to see how they perform over the next few games before making decisions. That’s why you’re not seeing a flurry of trades yet.”
Despite the uncertainty, Armstrong is optimistic. “Last year, our first season in Utah, we talked about playing meaningful games in March and April.
And we did that,” he reflected. “This year, the goal is the playoffs.
And right now, we have a chance. We’re about where I expected us to be.
Now it’s time for us to get the job done.”
The Mammoth have shown they can compete with the best in the West. Whether Armstrong makes a move before the deadline or not, the team is poised to make a serious playoff push, much to the delight of their growing fanbase.
