Utah Faces Its First Real Test After That Dominant Opener

As the Utah Mammoth embark on a challenging road trip, their offensive prowess faces a formidable test against the fully-loaded Columbus Blue Jackets in Game 2.

The Utah Mammoth are heading into their second game of the season with momentum and a much tougher test waiting in Columbus.

After steamrolling the Chicago Blackhawks 6-0 at home on Thursday, Utah now opens a five-game road trip against the Blue Jackets. The Mammoth were in control for the overwhelming majority of that win, and they’ll try to keep that same edge tonight against a Columbus team that also enters at 1-0-0.

Puck drop is set for Oct. 3 at 5:00 p.m. MT, with coverage on ESPN+, Hulu, and Disney Plus.

Both clubs are healthy. Columbus is carrying no injuries, while Utah’s only absence is Maveric Lamoureux, who underwent shoulder surgery during the week.

The matchup figures to be a different kind of challenge for Utah. Chicago had trouble generating much of anything in the offensive zone, but Columbus brings more punch. Matthew Knies made an immediate impact for the Blue Jackets with two goals and an assist, and that kind of production is exactly what Utah won’t be able to take lightly.

Against the Blackhawks, Utah set the tone by leaning into the physical side of the game. The Mammoth finished by controlling the hits battle and using that edge to smother Chicago’s offense, leading to the first home shutout in Utah history.

Still, this one looks tighter on paper. The expectation is that Utah will keep creating offense, especially through its dangerous second line, but won’t run away with it the way it did Thursday.

Prediction: Utah 5, Columbus 3.

Former Coyotes Core Made Utahs Latest Win Feel Much Bigger

The Utah Mammoths 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets did more than keep their Eastern Conference road trip rolling. It pushed them to 2-0 away from home and again highlighted how dangerous their power play has been, with three goals coming on the man advantage. For a team still settling in under its new name and identity, those are the kinds of nights that travel well.

What made it feel bigger for Coyotes fans watching from afar was the familiar footprint on the score sheet. Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz both hit personal scoring milestones, a reminder of how much of Utahs current spine was built in Arizona. And with Sebastian Cossa earning the win in his first NHL start, the night carried the feel of a franchise that has moved on, even as parts of its old core continue to shape the next chapter. Roadrunners Young Core Got A Harsh First Taste Of The AHL

The Tucson Roadrunners opened their 2026-27 season at home with a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Eagles, a reminder that the AHL can make even a young, talented roster pay for a few shaky minutes. Colorado broke the game open in the second period behind goals from Nikita Prishchepov and Jake Wise, while goaltender Ilya Nabokov turned aside 32 shots to finish off the shutout.

For Tucson, the night still carried plenty of firsts, with eight players making their AHL debuts as the organization continues to see its next wave of prospects take on bigger roles. Rookie goaltender Michael Hrabal stopped 18 of 20 shots in his first look, and the Roadrunners will now have to carry the lesson from a flat opener into the rest of a season that figures to lean heavily on youth.
