Michael Hrabal didn’t just backstop Tucson to a win on Friday night - he authored the kind of game a young goalie remembers.
The Roadrunners rolled past the San Diego Gulls 3-0 at Tucson Arena, stretching their winning streak to three straight and doing it the same way they did the previous game: by never giving up the lead. Hrabal stopped all 31 shots he saw for his first career AHL shutout, and he needed only his eighth career start to do it.
Tucson got the scoring started midway through the first period when assistant captain Ben McCartney snapped a quick shot from the bottom of the right circle for his second goal of the season. The Roadrunners controlled much of the opening frame, outshooting San Diego 13-9, but Hrabal still had to be sharp early. He turned away Herman Träff 21 seconds in, then denied Jett Woo on a breakaway after Gregor Biber hit the post at the other end.
The lead grew late in the second period when Cameron Hebig redirected a shot through traffic for his second goal of the season. Robbie Russo and captain Austin Poganski picked up the assists on the play, and Tucson took a 2-0 cushion into the third.
San Diego pushed hard after that. The Gulls outshot the Roadrunners 13-5 in the final period and had several looks to get back in it, including a shot from Solberg that rang off the post on a power play and a pair of chances from Anton Wahlberg that Hrabal handled with calm precision. But every time the Gulls leaned on the pressure, Tucson’s rookie goaltender answered.
Brandon Tanev finished it off with an empty-net goal in the closing minutes, and McCartney picked up the lone assist to cap a two-point night. McCartney also extended his point streak to four games and his multi-point streak to three, while also moving to 71 career AHL goals, three shy of tying Michael Bunting for second place in franchise history.
The scoring sheet had plenty of familiar Tucson names. Poganski, rookie Gabe Smith, and defensemen Artem Duda and Robbie Russo all recorded assists.
Duda has three points in his last three games, and Smith has four points in his last three. Hebig has now scored in two of his last three.
Joshua Roy skated in his 150th career AHL game.
The win also gave Tucson its first home victory of the season and snapped a four-game home losing streak to San Diego that dated back to Dec. 18, 2024.
The Roadrunners also haven’t trailed since 4:57 of the first period at San Jose on Oct. 9.
For Hrabal, though, this one will stand apart. He finished with 31 saves, and when the night was over, the Roadrunners had the shutout, the streak, and the cleanest possible kind of statement win.

Clayton Kellers Latest Off-Ice Role Carries A Personal Reason
Clayton Kellers latest off-ice role comes with a personal edge, as the Utah Mammoth captain has stepped into the NHLs Hockey Fights Cancer initiative as a champion. The leagues annual campaign is in its 28th season and has raised more than $53 million since 1998, and Kellers involvement gives him another platform beyond the rink while tying his name to a cause that has long been part of hockeys broader community effort.
For Keller, the work carries extra meaning because it is connected to his late grandfather, who died of cancer. He is helping front a fundraising push aimed at supporting cancer research through the V Foundation, adding a meaningful layer to a campaign that already has national reach. For a player whose presence has mattered so much on the ice, this is a reminder that his influence can extend well beyond hockey, even as the details of the effort continue to unfold. [Read more 🡒]
