The Utah Mammoth are down to their final preseason tune-up, and Friday’s practice at the Delta Center came with a little bit of everything: roster moves, a first look at the building’s renovations, and the usual late-camp push to clean things up before the games start to matter.
Utah made another wave of cuts on Friday, sending forwards Yegor Borikov, Caleb Desnoyers, Tij Iginla, Gabe Smith, and goaltender Michael Hrabal to the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL. Forwards Brandon Tanev and Joshua Roy, along with defenseman Zac Jones, were placed on waivers with the goal of being assigned to Tucson. Later in the evening, the Mammoth assigned Tomas Lavoie to the Roadrunners.
The group also got its first real look at the revamped North End of the Delta Center, and the reaction was immediate. It was the first time the players had seen the changes in person, and the homecoming vibe was obvious.
“It’s pretty cool, just amazed how quickly they get things done here,” associate captain Lawson Crouse shared. “But obviously not surprised.
It looks beautiful out there. Looks like the sites from up there are going to be incredible.
Obviously, add to that incredible atmosphere that we already have.”
Tourigny echoed that excitement after seeing the building from ice level.
“The building, it’s great,” Tourigny said. “You look from the ice, it looks fantastic.
It’s really steep, it’s massive, so that’s pretty cool. From the energy (being back at the Delta Center), I think it just made us want to play even quicker.
I think we have to wait until tomorrow, we’re like kids at Christmas who are waiting for our gifts. Looking forward to 3 p.m. tomorrow.”
Utah now has one last chance to get real game reps before the regular season begins, and the focus is on tightening the details. The Mammoth will face the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, with Crouse saying the team is using the game to sharpen the parts that still need work.
“Just all our details,” Crouse shared. “It’s our final chance to work out the kinks before the real (games) … just excited obviously.
We missed our home fans. It will be nice to get back out there and play in front of them, round out our game, and get ready for the home opener.”
Logan Cooley pointed to the same priorities, with the emphasis on tempo and system work.
“Getting back into game pace,” Logan Cooley said on tomorrow’s focus. “There’s still a little tweaks in here and systems we’re working on, d-zone, offensively, there’s always stuff we’re improving on.
But I feel like everyone’s getting it a lot better now. We’re playing a lot faster and hopefully we can translate that into tomorrow and into the regular season.”
