Tyson Bagent, the emotional quarterback who captured hearts with his tearful reaction to a $10 million contract extension, might be on the brink of another career-defining moment. Last August, Bagent signed a two-year extension with the Chicago Bears, a moment that left him visibly moved during a press conference.
In the previous season, Bagent played a supporting role behind Bears' starter Caleb Williams, appearing in three games as the team made a playoff push. Now, the Arizona Cardinals are reportedly eyeing Bagent as a potential successor to Kyler Murray, who seems poised to move on.
Veteran radio host John Gambadoro recently stirred the pot by suggesting the Cardinals' interest in Bagent. He shared on social media that Arizona is intrigued by the Bears' backup QB, noting that a trade would be necessary since Bagent has one year remaining on his contract.
Gambadoro highlighted Bagent's journey from Martinsburg, West Virginia, through Shepherd University, to beating out PJ Walker for Chicago's backup spot. His impressive performance earned him a two-year, $10 million extension.
Clarifying any confusion, Gambadoro added that Bagent actually has two years left on his contract, the same deal that brought him to tears last summer. Reflecting on his upbringing, Bagent shared how his father faced significant hardships, including growing up without running water until high school. The contract, he said, is a blessing that lifts a weight off his and his family’s shoulders.
Bagent’s journey is remarkable. After going undrafted in 2023, he showcased his skills at Division II Shepherd University, setting records along the way.
In the 2024 season, he played in four games, throwing two passes, while Williams, drafted No. 1 overall, started every game. Bagent’s earlier stint in five games, with four starts, saw him lead the Bears to two victories during Justin Fields' injury absence.
He completed 66% of his passes for 859 yards, with three touchdowns and six interceptions.
Bears coach Ben Johnson praised Bagent’s dedication and growth, emphasizing the depth and talent in the quarterback room. Johnson lauded Bagent's understanding of the game and his execution, noting that the team’s quarterback group is among the best he’s encountered.
As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on Bagent and whether his journey takes another unexpected turn.
