Jeremiyah Love says the ankle is no longer the issue, and that puts Arizona in an interesting spot heading into Sunday.
The Cardinals rookie running back told reporters Thursday that he is past the cautious phase after spending much of August watching practice from the sideline. Love is off the Week 2 injury report, and he made it clear he wants a bigger workload when Arizona hosts the Seattle Seahawks at State Farm Stadium.
“Heading into this next week, it’s all gas no brakes,” Love said, a line Bo Brack of PHNX Sports captured on video after practice.
He added that the high-ankle sprain that wrecked his preseason did not limit him in Week 1. Love said he was simply mindful of how the ankle felt. If he’s on the field, he said, he expects to work.
That’s a notable stance considering how Arizona handled him in the opener. Love gave the Cardinals exactly the kind of spark they wanted on the first possession at SoFi Stadium, turning a five-yard run around left end into the first touchdown of the 2026 season.
But his day settled into a quieter rhythm after that. He finished with 11 carries for 41 yards and the score, along with two catches for nine yards in Arizona’s 26-14 win, according to his NFL.com game log.
Tyler Allgeier ended up with the larger share of the backfield work. The veteran logged 17 carries for 61 yards and more snaps, with Arizona Sports tracing that split to both game script and health.
Love handled the early touches. Allgeier took over as the Cardinals leaned on the clock late.
The win itself carried real weight. Arizona was a heavy underdog entering Week 1 and came away with the biggest opening-weekend upset since 2018, a point ESPN tied to first-year coach Mike LaFleur’s debut. Jacoby Brissett threw for 277 yards, and while the run game never took over, it didn’t need to.
Love’s ankle situation has been a storyline since Aug. 13, when he was hurt against the Las Vegas Raiders in the preseason. ESPN later described it as a high-ankle sprain that cost him three weeks of practice.
He turned down a walking boot and got to work in rehab right away. Even so, he entered Week 1 as a limited practice player with a questionable designation.
Now he’s cleared for Seattle week, and Cardinals Wire noted he was off the team’s midweek injury report when the first report of the week came out. That matches what Love said publicly: the ankle isn’t the thing holding him back anymore.
That doesn’t necessarily mean Arizona will unleash him. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer has reported that the Cardinals plan to be careful about piling up miles on a young back this early, and LaFleur has already said no single running back should be expected to handle every snap.
Allgeier is there for a reason. James Conner and Trey Benson are still working back from last year’s injuries.
This backfield was built to share the load.
Love still showed what he can do in the opener, forcing missed tackles against the Chargers and scoring on the first drive. He also averaged 3.7 yards per carry, a number shaped partly by the Chargers front and partly by the fact that he missed most of August before being eased into the game plan.
That’s one set of questions for Arizona. The ankle is another.
And only one of them is supposed to travel to Glendale.
Sunday is Arizona’s home opener, with kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX from State Farm Stadium, according to the Cardinals’ official site. Seattle comes in as the defending Super Bowl champion after beating New England 29-13 in Super Bowl LX, as noted on the team’s Super Bowl LX page.
The Seahawks also won’t have Sam Darnold. He’s out with a glute injury and will not go on injured reserve, with Drew Lock set to start after Mike Macdonald’s Wednesday briefing, as NFL.com reported.
That changes things for Arizona’s defense, but it doesn’t guarantee Love gets a bigger slice of the offense. Seattle still has to be blocked, and one full week of practice doesn’t suddenly turn a committee into a feature-back setup.
Arizona took Love third overall in April, making him the highest running back selected since Saquon Barkley in 2018 and the Cardinals’ first first-round back since Beanie Wells in 2009, according to the league’s draft recap. He also signed a four-year deal with roughly $53 million guaranteed, which was the richest guarantee ever attached to the position at the time of the signing on Revenge of the Birds. A 2025 unanimous All-American and Doak Walker Award winner wasn’t drafted that high to just spell Allgeier on third-and-2.
The Cardinals got a glimpse of what he can bring in Week 1. Sunday gives them the next one.
