The Carolina Panthers are making some roster moves ahead of Week 16, elevating linebacker Isaiah Simmons and offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles from the practice squad.
Let’s start with Simmons - a name that still turns heads thanks to his unique athletic profile and the high expectations that came with it. Once the No. 8 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Simmons came out of Clemson as a do-it-all defender who won the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker. His blend of size, speed, and versatility made him one of the most intriguing prospects in recent memory, with the potential to line up just about anywhere on the field.
But his NFL journey has been anything but linear.
After four seasons in Arizona, where he flashed playmaking ability but never quite locked down a consistent role, the Cardinals declined his fifth-year option in May 2023. That sent Simmons into free agency, and he landed a one-year deal with the Giants.
He saw time in New York but didn’t stick long-term. The Packers took a flier on him this past offseason, but he didn’t make it out of training camp.
Now, Simmons finds himself in Carolina, working his way back through the practice squad. He’s appeared in two games for the Panthers this season, logging a tackle. While it’s a far cry from the expectations that followed him out of college, this latest elevation gives Simmons another shot to prove he still has something to offer - whether it’s on special teams, as a sub-package defender, or simply as a veteran presence with upside.
As for Saahdiq Charles, he’s another former high draft pick looking to reestablish himself. The offensive lineman has shown flashes of potential but has battled injuries and inconsistency throughout his career. His elevation suggests the Panthers are looking to shore up depth up front, possibly due to health concerns or performance issues along the offensive line.
Both moves reflect where Carolina is right now - a team in transition, evaluating talent, and giving opportunities to players with pedigree who are still fighting to carve out a role. For Simmons and Charles, Week 16 is more than just another game. It’s a chance to reintroduce themselves to the league.
