Josh Sweat Trade Buzz Puts Cardinals In A Familiar Deadline Spot

With the NFL trade deadline approaching, Josh Sweat's future with the Arizona Cardinals hangs in the balance as top teams express interest amidst his contract uncertainties.

The Arizona Cardinals are headed into the Nov. 10 trade deadline with plenty of attention on them, and the loudest buzz is centered on Josh Sweat.

Arizona sits at 2-5, has already moved Marvin Harrison Jr., and now looks like a team willing to listen if the price is right. The Cardinals have talent on the roster that could draw interest, and Sweat is the biggest name of the bunch.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler identified the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers as teams to watch in the Sweat chatter.

Sweat is in the second year of a four-year, $76 million deal, and the final two seasons carry no guaranteed money. He’s reportedly seeking a new contract that would change that.

Since signing with Arizona in 2025, Sweat put together 12 sacks and was nearly a Pro Bowl player before getting left out. After the Cardinals fired head coach Jonathan Gannon following the season, Sweat reportedly asked for a trade.

Arizona kept him anyway, even after the trade noise picked up again during training camp. But with the team now sliding in the wrong direction, general manager Monti Ossenfort may decide this is the right moment to cash in.

The expected return on Sweat is a Day 2 pick, and that kind of price could appeal to a contender trying to get over the hump. Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco all fit that description, at least on paper.

The Cowboys are 3-4 and badly need a spark if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Bears’ interest in Sweat and other defenders makes sense as they try to bring more balance to their roster. And for the 49ers, a deal in the division would reportedly require a massive overpay.

Arizona already landed a round two pick for Harrison, and Sweat could be the next name to bring in a similar return.

He turns 30 soon and has only two sacks this season, with knee injury management also in the picture. Sweat didn’t practice in any form this offseason, and so far he has only flashed the kind of disruptive play Arizona expected.

Whether a move changes that remains to be seen, but right now Sweat is one of the hottest names on the market.

Cardinals QB Debate Just Got Harder To Ignore

Mike LaFleur made it clear the Cardinals are sticking with Jacoby Brissett for now, confirming the veteran will start against the Cowboys as Arizona tries to steady an offense that has been moving the ball without finishing enough drives. LaFleur said the issue is less about getting into scoring position and more about what happens once the Cardinals get there, a distinction that has become harder to ignore as the season has worn on.

The pressure around the quarterback spot has only grown with fan noise pushing rookie Carson Beck into the conversation, but LaFleur said there have been no talks about benching Brissett. For now, Arizona is choosing continuity over change, even as the red-zone frustration lingers and the offense keeps leaving points on the field. [Read more 🡒]

Carson Beck Timeline Just Became A Real Cardinals Debate

The rookie quarterback class has been slow to arrive in the NFL, but Carson Becks path is starting to look a lot more relevant for Arizona as the season moves deeper into the second half. Through Week 7, most of the quarterbacks taken in the draft still have not started a game, and that kind of delay tends to sharpen the focus on teams like the Cardinals, where every week without a clear answer under center makes the next move feel more important.

Arizona sits 2-5, and the longer the offense stays in limbo, the more Beck becomes part of the conversation around the franchises future. Jacoby Brissett has helped stabilize the position enough to keep the Cardinals afloat, but there is still no long-term answer in place, which is why the timeline on Beck is now being watched so closely around the building. Cardinals Keep Facing The Same Offensive Question As Pressure Builds

The Cardinals are still sorting through the same offensive questions that have followed them through the last stretch, and the pressure is only getting louder as the season moves on. Mike LaFleur made it clear Jacoby Brissett remains the starter, a decision that keeps the focus on a group trying to find cleaner execution and better finishing when it matters most.

Arizonas recent struggles have not been pinned on one player alone, and that is part of what makes the situation so tricky. The offense has had chances to turn drives into something more meaningful, but the conversation around the unit keeps circling back to the same issue: enough movement to threaten, not enough payoff to relieve the strain that comes with each passing week.
