Josh Sweat Suddenly Sits At Center Of Cardinals Trade Debate

As the NFL trade deadline looms, the Dallas Cowboys are eyeing a major defensive upgrade by potentially acquiring Pro Bowler Josh Sweat from the Arizona Cardinals.

The Dallas Cowboys may not be done wheeling and dealing before the NFL trade deadline, and one name has emerged as a particularly clean fit: Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler put the possibility in sharper focus in his Week 7 buzz file, with one league executive pointing directly to Dallas as a landing spot.

“Josh Sweat to Dallas makes a lot of sense,” Fowler wrote, citing the unnamed executive.

That idea has real traction because the Cowboys still have an obvious problem to fix. Even after being aggressive earlier in the 2026 season by landing cornerback Joey Porter Jr., Dallas has continued to struggle in the areas that matter most on defense - getting home on quarterbacks and finishing plays off the edge. Sweat would attack that issue head-on.

The fit is also attractive because this is not just a rental-type move. Sweat has already shown he can produce, recording 12 sacks for Arizona last season, and he is under contract through 2028. That gives Dallas a potential long-term piece instead of a short-term patch.

Arizona’s side of the equation matters too. The Cardinals are not being treated like true contenders, even after their recent victory, which is part of why the trade idea has gained steam.

There is still plenty to consider before Dallas makes another move. The Cowboys are 2-4, and they have already spent significant draft capital in recent deals. On paper, that would seem to make another swing less likely.

But the NFC East changes the math. Fowler noted that Dallas’ record may be closer to 4-4 in the context of the division, and that keeps the Cowboys within reach despite the slow start.

That is the kind of situation that tends to invite a Jerry Jones gamble.

Dallas has spent plenty of time talking about Super Bowl expectations, and the defense has been the weak link. If the Cowboys believe one proven pass rusher can change the shape of that unit, another trade pick could be the price they decide to pay.

For now, Sweat to Dallas remains just a possibility. There’s no sign a deal is close. But with the deadline approaching and ESPN connecting the Cowboys to a logical target, this is one worth tracking.

Cardinals May Have Found A Formula Fans Can Finally Trust

For a team that has spent plenty of time trying to find something stable to hang onto, the win over the Rams offered at least a little evidence that the Cardinals may be getting closer to a formula they can trust. The defense looked sharper, the overall operation felt cleaner, and the result gave Arizona a needed boost heading into the next stretch of games.

Nick Rallis deserves a lot of credit for the way the unit held up, with Matt LaFleurs input also helping shape the plan against a familiar opponent. Jacoby Brissett did not need to light up the scoreboard for Arizona to leave with a win, and just as important, he stayed away from the kind of mistakes that can undo a solid defensive effort. Mike LaFleur Loved The Win But Knows Cardinals Have A Problem

The win over the Rams gave Mike LaFleur plenty to like, especially the way Arizona kept hanging around and found a way to finish. He praised the Cardinals resilience afterward and leaned on Chad Rylands scoring to get the job done, a reminder that sometimes a divisional game can turn into a survival test more than a showcase.

Still, the way Arizona got there underscored a problem the staff cannot ignore for long. Special teams carried too much of the load, and even in a victory, the Cardinals left the field knowing they need far cleaner work in that phase if they want these close games to keep tilting their way. Budda Baker Is Back At The Center Of A Cardinals Debate

Budda Baker is right back in the middle of a familiar kind of NFL conversation, the sort that follows a respected veteran whenever the trade deadline starts looming. A CBS Sports feature put the Cardinals safety on a wish list of players the league might like to see moved, leaning on his track record and the idea that a fresh start could make sense for both player and team.

For Arizona, the attention is less about any actual transaction than about what it says regarding a standout defender who has long been central to the franchise. The piece floated the Bills, Bengals and Jaguars as possible landing spots, but there is no report of a deal nearing completion, only the usual deadline buzz that can turn into something more if the right offer ever comes along.
