Dallas Cowboys Extend Javonte Williams, Leaving Cardinals Searching for a Running Back

Javonte Williams' new deal with the Dallas Cowboys reshapes the free agency landscape, leaving the Cardinals in search of a reliable running back.

The Arizona Cardinals are gearing up for free agency, and a running back might be high on their shopping list. However, one potential target is no longer available. The Dallas Cowboys have locked in Javonte Williams with a three-year, $24 million contract extension.

Williams is coming off a stellar 2025 season, where he rushed for a career-high 1,201 yards and found the end zone 11 times, averaging an impressive 4.8 yards per carry. He also contributed through the air with 35 receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. At just 26 years old, Williams would have been a prime candidate for the Cardinals, but the Cowboys made sure he stayed put before free agency even kicked off.

As it stands, the Cardinals have James Conner and Trey Benson on their roster. However, both are returning from season-ending injuries. Conner, who will be 31 next season, managed only 3.0 yards per carry before his injury, making him a potential cap casualty.

With free agency opening on March 9 and the legal negotiating window starting on March 11, the Cardinals will need to navigate the market carefully to bolster their backfield.
