Cowboys Just Put Extra Pressure On Their Cardinals Matchup

Dak Prescott acknowledges the Cowboys' need to revitalize their running game as they prepare to face the Arizona Cardinals, following Jerry Jones' call for a ground-game focus.

Dak Prescott isn’t shying away from the Cowboys’ offensive identity debate after Jerry Jones made it clear he wants Dallas to be “a run-first team.”

Coming off Monday night’s 38-21 win over the rival Philadelphia Eagles, Prescott said Thursday that the performance in Philly was bigger than just one good outing. It was, in his words, “an attempt at re-identifying who we want to be” on offense.

The quarterback was blunt about what the Cowboys had been missing. Dallas has leaned too far away from the ground game at times, and Prescott said that hurt the offense.

“We obviously know we love our run actions and throwing the ball like that, but you've got to get the run going,” Prescott explained, per Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' website. “We weren't committed enough to it the last couple of weeks before last, and I think that obviously hurt us. We got us into more of a passing situation than we wanted to be earlier than we planned.”

The numbers back up the issue. ESPN stats show the Cowboys enter Sunday’s home game against the 2-5 Arizona Cardinals ranked 25th in the league with 94.3 rushing yards per game.

But the Eagles game looked very different. Javonte Williams powered Dallas with 155 rushing yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, and the Cowboys finished with 204 rushing yards as a team.

Prescott said the plan in Philadelphia was deliberate from the start.

“It was a very intentional approach of making sure that we're gonna stick to the run, trust those guys, watch that one-yard, two-yard runs turn into four and fives, and then even those turn into 10 and 12's. It was a great start,” Prescott added about what occurred at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.

Now the focus shifts to Arizona, and Prescott made it clear the Cowboys can’t afford a repeat of recent struggles against the Cardinals. Dallas has lost four straight to Arizona and eight of the last nine meetings overall. Last November, the Cardinals beat the Cowboys in Dallas.

“We got to win,” Prescott said about this Sunday's contest. “Understanding what happened last year, it was an ugly, ugly game, ugly on our part.

You can go to some years before then, whether it'd been at Arizona. They've had our number these last couple of years.

Credit to their defense, credit to the way those guys come in and play and execute, but it's a new year.”

As of Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the 3-4 Cowboys as seven-point home favorites against the Cardinals.

Cardinals Suddenly Need Their Biggest Weakness To Show Up Vs Cowboys

Arizonas rushing game has been one of the quieter problems in a season full of them, with the Cardinals sitting near the bottom of the league in rushing yards and yards per carry. Now comes a Week 8 matchup with Dallas, a defense that has given up plenty on the ground in multiple games, which at least creates a rare opening for a ground attack that has struggled to find any rhythm.

The catch is that Arizona may have to take advantage with a line that is already stretched thin. Chase Bisontis and Paris Johnson are out for the season, and rookie Jayden Williams has been pushed into the left tackle spot, leaving the Cardinals close to a patchwork front even before the latest injury concern to center Hjalte Froholdt. If the run game is going to matter Sunday, it may need to hold up in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]

Cardinals Still Own One Rivalry That Cowboys Fans Hate

The Cardinals and Cowboys have spent decades crossing paths, and the recent run has given Arizona a little extra bragging room in a rivalry that has usually tilted Dallas way. Since 1960, the two teams have met 92 times in the regular season and once in the playoffs, with the Cowboys still holding the edge in the all-time series. But the more relevant backdrop for Cardinals fans is the recent stretch, where Arizona has taken eight of the last nine and arrived with the kind of edge that has made this matchup feel different lately.

Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb recently pointed to the Cardinals consistent energy in these games, a nod to how often Arizona has shown up ready for Dallas. For a rivalry that still carries plenty of history, the current trend is what stands out, especially with the Cardinals having built a habit of making life uncomfortable for one of the leagues most recognizable teams. The larger question now is whether that pattern is just a hot streak or something Dallas still has not figured out. [Read more 🡒]

Cardinals Game Could Decide What Jerry Jones Does Next

Jerry Jones has left the door open just enough to keep the Cowboys in the middle of the NFL rumor mill, but not enough to suggest a major move is imminent. The Dallas owner and general manager said it is unlikely he will swing a blockbuster trade before the deadline, even as his team has been tied to possible interest in names such as Maxx Crosby and wide receiver George Pickens. For now, the Cowboys are still sorting through their own issues, and Jones pointed to their recent trouble against Arizona as one of the reasons he wants to see that trend change.

The timing matters because Dallas has another shot at the Cardinals coming up, and Jones made clear that game could shape what comes next. He did not rule out staying active in the trade market once that matchup is in the books, which keeps the possibility of a deadline move alive without making it feel likely today. For a Cowboys team trying to find traction, the Cardinals game is suddenly about more than just the standings. [Read more 🡒]
