The Chargers are drawing plenty of attention in the 2026 betting market, but not every shiny number is worth chasing. ESPN betting analyst Pamela Maldonado sees a team with some real appeal in spots, yet she’s not buying into the more popular prices on Los Angeles futures.
Her biggest pushback comes on the win total. DraftKings opened the Chargers at 10.5 before the number slid to 9.5, but Maldonado isn’t eager to back the Over at -140.
She said that price still asks the Chargers to win at least 10 games about 58% of the time, and she doesn’t trust that rate. She also passed on the Over 10.5 at +130, noting that it would require a third straight 11-win season against a tougher schedule and a brutal rest setup.
Her lean there is the Under at +115.
Maldonado was just as cold on the Chargers to win the AFC West at +190. With the Broncos coming off a 14-3 season and the Chiefs listed as slight favorites at +175, she said the price is simply too rich.
Even with Justin Herbert healthy and Mike McDaniel stepping in as offensive coordinator, she pointed to the league’s worst rest disadvantage, a tougher schedule and expected regression after Los Angeles went 6-2 in one-score games. Her view was blunt: liking the team and liking the number are two different things.
That same caution carried over to the star players. Omarion Hampton has the kind of talent and breakout upside that gets bettors excited, and Maldonado acknowledged the expected workload and improved line in front of him.
Still, she said she would only consider him for Offensive Player of the Year at an enormous +4000. Even then, the matchup environment is ugly, with the Chargers projected to face the NFL’s hardest schedule in rushing efficiency and explosive rushing.
She would pass on his over rushing yards prop, though she said his receiving props become more interesting in favorable matchups.
Her take on Herbert in the MVP race was also a fade at +1000. Maldonado said that number is too short for a quarterback whose team she is already leaning under on the win total.
Better protection, healthier tackles and an upgraded interior line should help Herbert, but she said MVP requires more than a better season. In her view, he probably needs elite volume, 11-plus wins and likely the division title, and she doesn’t see enough team or statistical upside against the second-hardest YPPA-defense schedule and fourth-hardest explosive-pass schedule.
She was similarly hesitant on Akheem Mesidor in Defensive Rookie of the Year markets at +1300. Maldonado called the price tempting, but said it is still too short.
With Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu ahead of him, she expects Mesidor to work in pass-rush packages rather than command enough snaps to chase double-digit sacks. She likes the talent and the experience, but not the number.
If there’s one Chargers futures bet she likes most, it’s Justin Herbert over 25.5 passing touchdowns at -110. Maldonado said McDaniel should lift an offense that ranked 29th in red-zone touchdown rate, and better protection should give Herbert more chances to finish drives. She doesn’t expect the schedule to be friendly to Herbert’s yardage or explosive plays, but she also said that doesn’t automatically cap his touchdown total.
For Week 1 against the Cardinals, her favorite play is Cardinals at Chargers under 46.5 points at -110. She pointed to the Chargers’ defense, which finished top 10 against the run and allowed the second-fewest red-zone touchdowns last season.
That, she said, fits how Arizona likely wants to play, leaning heavily on Love and protecting Jacoby Brissett. A run-heavy script should keep the clock moving, which is exactly the kind of setup she wants for an under.
