GLENDALE - The Arizona Cardinals turned Thursday’s Hall of Fame game into an early look at the future, naming rookie quarterback Carson Beck their starter against the Carolina Panthers.
That decision caught plenty of people off guard. Gardner Minshew and Jacoby Brissett were widely expected to get the nod, but Brissett’s contract debacle delayed his arrival for head coach Mike LaFleur, opening the door for Beck to take the first snap of the preseason.

For a Cardinals team that looks built around short-term quarterback answers, the move says as much about the bigger picture as it does about this week’s game. Brissett and Minshew are both on one-year deals, while Beck arrived as a third-round flyer. With the 2027 NFL quarterback draft class drawing plenty of attention, the front office appears set on finding its next long-term option in next year’s first round.
Beck, though, has spent the summer acting like a player determined to make that plan harder. The 23-year-old has said that his time in systems at Miami and Georgia prepared him for life as a pro, and he’s also said he’s already logging 13-hour days at the practice facility. That work has clearly registered with the coaching staff, which rewarded him with the chance to start the nationally televised opener.
Still, Thursday’s assignment doesn’t lock in anything beyond Thursday. Minshew and Brissett may not even suit up in pads, and another week of work for Brissett could put him in line to start the Aug. 13 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Brissett’s 10-year experience and his $15.5 million guaranteed salary for 2026 make him the likeliest starter once he’s fully up to speed.
So Beck’s first start is less about winning a job right now and more about forcing the Cardinals to think twice about what comes next. He is the only quarterback under contract for next season, and his performance will be watched with one big question in mind: can he make Monti Ossenfort and Michael Bidwill hesitate before spending a first-round pick on another quarterback?
For a rookie in his position, that’s a lot to carry into his first preseason start.
