Carson Beck is getting the first crack at game action in a Cardinals uniform, and that alone makes Thursday night worth watching in Arizona.
Mike LaFleur said the rookie quarterback will start the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers in the Hall of Fame Game after what he called Beck’s strongest practice since camp began. LaFleur pointed to Beck’s accuracy and the way he’s been running the offense, and that performance has earned him the chance to open the game under center.
Beck’s first NFL snap comes after Arizona took him with the 65th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft following his final college season at Miami. He arrived in training camp as the third quarterback on the Cardinals’ depth chart, sitting behind Jacoby Brissett and Gardner Minshew II.
That hierarchy is not changing because of this start. It’s a preseason setup. Brissett and Minshew are both expected to sit out Thursday, which leaves Beck and Kedon Slovis to handle the quarterback reps against Carolina.
For Arizona, this is less about naming a starter and more about getting a real look at a young quarterback in a live setting. Practices can show progress, but game action gives coaches a better read on Beck’s decision-making, his command of the offense and how he handles pressure when the bullets are real.
Beck’s college résumé is already substantial. He finished his career with 11,725 passing yards, 88 touchdown passes and 32 interceptions, and he was the third quarterback taken in the 2026 draft.
The bigger competition in the room remains the backup job behind Brissett. Thursday won’t settle that battle, but it will give Beck a platform to keep building on a strong camp and give the Cardinals more to work with as they sort out their quarterback situation before the regular season.
