The Arizona Cardinals have a quarterback situation that still isn’t settled, and the clock is ticking toward training camp.
Jacoby Brissett is in the middle of a contract dispute with Arizona, and there’s no clear finish line in sight as the team gets ready to report in just under two weeks. He skipped mandatory minicamp and was absent from offseason team activities, but he did get on the field with a couple of the Cardinals’ biggest names in South Florida.
Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride were among the skill players who traveled to work out with Brissett for a few days, according to his social media.
Brissett is seeking more guaranteed money, according to ESPN, but does not want extra years added to a deal that runs through the end of 2026. At this point, only $1.5 million remains guaranteed for him.
That makes the situation even more interesting when you stack it against Gardner Minshew, the free agent signing who is projected to be the backup and is set to make more this coming season.
Arizona reportedly told Brissett earlier in the offseason that he would be the starter after he took over for the injured Kyler Murray and started the final 12 games of 2025. Even with the contract issue hanging over everything, McBride made it clear he wants Brissett around.
"Guys want him here. Obviously would love to have him in the building.
He’s working through somethings on his own so we totally understand that. You can just tell the presence that he brought today being in the building was awesome."
The Cardinals and Brissett are likely hoping to get a deal done before the July 22 report date. What that looks like is still up in the air, but Arizona may need to add a few more million in guarantees to get this over the line.
There are reasons for hesitation on both sides. Minshew is already in the building, and third-round pick Carson Beck is now part of the mix too, which makes paying Brissett more complicated. On top of that, the Cardinals are coming off a 3-14 season, and there isn’t much visible certainty about 2026.
Still, Brissett is 33 and staring at what could be his final shot to lock in both guaranteed money and another run as a starter. The Cardinals have reportedly been willing to work with him on a new deal, and that approach doesn’t appear to have changed over the summer.
