The Arizona Cardinals may be staring at a Week 1 running back shortage before the regular season even gets here.
Rookie Jeremiyah Love is already in question after suffering a high ankle sprain in Arizona’s preseason opener, and the Cardinals now sound unsure about veteran James Conner as well. Head coach Mike LaFleur said Thursday that Conner is still making progress, but his availability for the opener is far from settled, per Darren Urban.
“It's starting to creep up,” LaFleur said.
Conner is working back from season-ending foot surgery early in the 2025 season, and with the regular season only a few weeks away, his Week 1 status is looking shaky. He has spent the summer doing individual work at practice, but he still hasn’t taken part in full team periods or 11-on-11 drills during camp.
Love’s injury has already knocked him out for the rest of the preseason, with the Cardinals hoping to get him back early in the regular season. For now, though, fans will be watching closely for the next update on his status.
If both Love and Conner are unavailable, Arizona’s depth chart gets thin in a hurry. Tyler Allgeier would be the likely starter in Week 1, with Bam Knight as the only notable reserve behind him.
That uncertainty lands just after the Cardinals released running back Trey Benson on August 24th, a move that could loom larger if Love can’t suit up for the opener. It also makes Arizona’s final roster decisions worth watching as the calendar turns toward Week 1.

Cardinals Just Sent A Clear Message About Kyler Murrays Protection
The Cardinals took another step toward stabilizing the middle of their offensive line by locking up Hjalte Froholdt on a two-year extension that keeps him under contract through 2028. Since arriving in Arizona in 2023, Froholdt has been exactly what teams want from a center: dependable, durable and available every week, starting all 51 regular season games across his first three seasons with the club.
For a team trying to keep Kyler Murray upright and the offense on schedule, that kind of consistency matters. Froholdts role only grew in 2025, when he served as a team captain, and the extension signals the Cardinals view him as more than just a steady starter in the middle. It also leaves the rest of the line with a clearer anchor as Arizona continues building around its quarterback. [Read more 🡒]
Cardinals Just Sent A Clear Message About Their Offensive Direction
The Cardinals quietly made a pretty clear commitment to stability up front by locking in center Hjalte Froholdt on a two-year, $20 million extension. Froholdt has been one of the steadier pieces on the roster since arriving in Arizona, starting all 51 games he has played for the team and giving the offense a familiar anchor in the middle.
For a team trying to settle into a new direction under first-year head coach Mike LaFleur, that matters. Froholdt said he is excited to keep playing in Arizona and had praise for LaFleurs offensive approach, which suggests the Cardinals are not just paying for a reliable veteran, but also doubling down on the kind of line continuity that can help a changing offense take root. Josh Sweats Return Just Raised A Bigger Cardinals Question
Josh Sweat was back on the practice field for the Cardinals for the first time since last season, a notable step for a defense that could use its most proven edge presence back in the mix. Activated from the physically unable to perform list, Sweat had spent camp on the sideline because of a knee issue that head coach Mike LaFleur described as maintenance, and his return offered a reminder of what Arizona missed when he was out.
Sweat led the team with 12 sacks last season, so even a simple return to practice carries more weight than it might for most players. The bigger question now is how quickly the Cardinals can ramp him up and what his presence means for a defense that has been waiting to see whether its top pass rusher can get back to something close to full speed.
