The Arizona Cardinals have been navigating a challenging season without their franchise quarterback, Kyler Murray, who hasn’t taken a snap since an October 5 loss to the Titans. With Murray sidelined for the remainder of the year, the team continues to lean on veteran Jacoby Brissett to steer the offense. But this week, the Cardinals made a quiet yet important move to reinforce their quarterback depth chart heading into the final stretch of the season.
After losing reserve quarterback Jeff Driskel to the Washington Commanders-who signed him off Arizona’s practice squad-the Cardinals responded by bringing in another experienced signal-caller: Logan Woodside. The veteran was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday and will serve as the team’s emergency third-string quarterback behind Brissett and rookie Kedon Slovis.
Now, Woodside isn’t a household name, and he’s not expected to take the field unless disaster strikes. But make no mistake-this is a player who’s been around the league and knows how to prepare like a pro.
Originally a seventh-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2018 NFL Draft, Woodside has bounced around the league, spending time with the Titans, Falcons, and Steelers. He even had a stint in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football, where he started for the San Antonio Commanders in 2019.
In terms of NFL game action, Woodside’s résumé is light-just 14 appearances, with a single completion for seven yards on three pass attempts. He’s added 14 rushing attempts for 10 yards. But while the stat sheet doesn’t scream impact player, his value lies in his experience in NFL quarterback rooms and his ability to step in and stabilize the depth chart.
For the Cardinals, this is about maintaining structure and preparedness. With Brissett entrenched as the starter and Slovis still developing, Woodside gives Arizona a veteran presence who can absorb the playbook quickly and be ready if needed. It’s a move that might fly under the radar, but in a league where quarterback depth can make or break a season, it’s a smart insurance policy.
So while the headlines may focus elsewhere, this signing is a reminder that even late in the season, every roster spot matters-especially under center.
