Cardinals Rookie Safety Faces A Roster Fight Unlike Any Other

Arizona Cardinals' head coach, Mike LaFleur, weighs in on the unprecedented eligibility twist that could see rookie safety Wydett Williams Jr. make an unexpected return to college football.

Arizona Cardinals rookie safety Wydett Williams Jr. has landed in one of the stranger roster situations of the preseason, with a court ruling now giving him a shot at another year of college football.

Williams was among 16 former college players included in a lawsuit that resulted in a temporary restraining order, opening the door for them to pursue another NCAA season. The NCAA can still appeal the ruling.

That wrinkle comes after the Division I board of directors adjusted eligibility rules to permit five seasons in five years, but did not extend that change to recent seniors - a group that includes Williams.

Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur didn’t pretend this was normal.

“I just know he's done a good job for us so far. This is going to be wild, how all this plays out,” said LaFleur.

Williams has already gotten plenty of work in Arizona’s first two preseason games. He played 61 defensive snaps and 16 special teams snaps in the Hall of Fame game against the Carolina Panthers, then followed that with 29 defensive snaps and 12 special teams snaps against the Las Vegas Raiders. Across those two games, he has nine tackles.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound defensive back started his college journey at Delta State before moving to Louisiana-Monroe in 2024 and Ole Miss in 2025. He went undrafted this spring, then signed a three-year deal with the Cardinals that includes $110,000 in guaranteed money.

For now, Williams is not projected to crack Arizona’s 53-man roster and may end up on the practice squad. Safety is already crowded with Budda Baker, Andrew Wingard, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson and Kitan Crawford on the depth chart.

NFL teams must trim rosters from 90 players to 53 by Sunday, Aug. 30.

If Williams doesn’t land on an NFL roster or practice squad, a return to college remains on the table. In that case, he would likely transfer again and could try to reshape his path toward the 2027 NFL Draft.

Cardinals Face Early Tip Reiman Decision They Didn't Want

Tip Reimans return has already become one of the first personnel questions hanging over Cardinals training camp, even before the pads come on for real. The second-year tight end is still working back from the severe ankle injury he suffered in October last season, and he opened camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list as Arizona begins sorting out its tight end room and the rest of the offense.

Mike LaFleur made it clear the team is not assuming Reiman will be ready for the opener, which puts the Cardinals in an uncomfortable early call on his PUP status. If he stays there, he would have to sit out the first four games, a tough outcome for a player LaFleur praised for his work ethic and for what he brings to the run game. [Read more 🡒]

Cardinals Lose A Key Rookie As Injury Questions Start Piling Up

The Cardinals had already been dealing with a growing list of injury concerns, and the latest roster moves only sharpened the issue. Arizona placed second-round draft pick Chase Bisontis on injured reserve, ending his season before it really got going, while tight end Jameson Geers and linebacker Austin Keys also landed on IR as the team continued to sort through its depth chart.

Arizona tried to refill some of those openings by signing tight end Baylor Cupp, running back Tre Stewart and defensive tackle Keveionta Spears. The transaction churn is part of the reality this time of year, but losing a rookie investment like Bisontis so early gives the Cardinals another long-term question to juggle as the injuries keep stacking up. Cardinals Suddenly Have A Week 1 Concern Fans Can't Ignore

The Cardinals are midway through preseason under Mike LaFleur, and the early tone around the new regime has been encouraging. LaFleur has already drawn praise for the way he has handled the room, but the injury report has become a quieter source of concern as Arizona keeps trying to stack healthy days and build toward opening week.

Rookie quarterback Kyler Beck has been limited by a rib injury that has cut into both practice work and game availability, even if the team is not sounding alarm bells yet. Running back Benson is also easing back from a meniscus injury, while defensive player Sweat remains on the physically unable to perform list with a knee issue and still has not practiced, leaving the Cardinals with a few notable absences as the regular season gets closer.
