The Arizona Cardinals are going with Josh Sweat after all.
Sweat, listed as questionable with a groin injury, was made active for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. He was not among the Cardinals’ six inactives announced 90 minutes before kickoff.
The outside linebacker had been limited on Friday after practicing fully on Thursday, and Arizona’s move to elevate Cameron Robertson from the practice squad on Saturday suggested some uncertainty about Sweat’s status. Robertson ended up inactive, along with Reggie Virgil, Carson Beck, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, Josh Fryar and Starling Thomas.
Even with Sweat available, the Cardinals still have a lot to sort out up front. Arizona’s pass rush has been stuck near the bottom of the league in sacks and pressures through the first three games, and Sweat himself has not come close to the level the team expected early in 2026. He has no sacks and only three tackles so far.
That’s a sharp drop from last season’s 12-sack breakout, and it comes after Arizona spent the summer carefully managing his workload to keep him healthy for the regular season. The results have been underwhelming, and the pressure is on for Sweat and Walter Nolen III to help the defense make something happen against Jameis Winston and the Giants.
Sweat has also spent much of the offseason under the microscope because of trade buzz that swirled around him. The Cardinals never moved him, despite reported interest from other teams, and general manager Monti Ossenfort made the team’s position clear during training camp.
"I'd say [trade] discussions that come by that, there's always a lot of talk that goes around that. We have no interest in trading Josh. We're excited to have him," Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort told reporters during training camp.
"Some of those discussions [we're] going to keep private. But excited to have Josh here, [he] had a great year last year. Excited for more good things out of him this year."
Sweat also had a confirmed "minor procedure" during the offseason, though the details were not disclosed.
He is in the second year of a four-year, $76 million deal with Arizona. The trade talk began after the Cardinals fired Jonathan Gannon early in the offseason, then resurfaced over the summer when Sweat did not take part in voluntary team activities, minicamp, training camp or preseason.

Trey McBride Was At The Center Of A Brutal Cardinals Officiating Controversy
The Cardinals Week 4 game against the Giants produced more than just another tense finish, as tight end Trey McBride found himself at the center of an ugly sideline scene in the fourth quarter. A video that quickly spread online showed a sideline official using profane language directed at McBride, turning an already heated moment into one that drew attention well beyond the field.
McBrides teammates stepped in and held him back on the sideline after the interaction, underscoring how quickly the exchange escalated. For Arizona, the incident added another layer of frustration to a game that already had plenty of emotion, and it is the kind of officiating controversy that tends to linger long after the final whistle. Cardinals Loss To Giants Turned On One Brutal Late Flag
The Cardinals Week 4 loss to the Giants came down to a single late swing, and it was one of those flags that can linger long after the final whistle. During a critical moment late in the third quarter, Arizona was penalized for holding on defensive lineman Dante Stills, a call that extended New Yorks drive and helped set up a touchdown that changed the lead.
Mike LaFleur has already pointed to the teams penalty issues as a problem that needs fixing, and this was the sort of sequence that makes that point hard to ignore. Arizona had been in position to get off the field, only to watch the drive stay alive and the momentum turn, leaving the Cardinals with another reminder that discipline has to hold up in key spots. Cardinals Pass Rush Suddenly Hinges On One Josh Sweat Decision
Josh Sweats situation has become one of the more intriguing Cardinals storylines as the season moves toward the November 10 trade deadline. The outside linebacker, who signed a four-year contract with Arizona, has played in three games this year while working through an offseason injury, and hes still in the middle of a familiar kind of NFL business conversation: performance, health and a deal that may no longer match the market.
What makes it worth watching is that Sweat reportedly wants an updated contract, even as trade interest is expected to build if Arizona decides to listen. He has also made it clear he wants to stay with the Cardinals, which gives the front office a choice between keeping a pass rusher it already invested in or testing whether theres a better long-term fit before the deadline closes the door.
