The Arizona Cardinals are heading into Sunday’s Week 3 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers without using either of their practice squad elevations, and that quiet move says plenty about how they feel about Roy Lopez and Max Melton.
Lopez, dealing with a groin injury, and Melton, listed with a toe issue, were both tagged questionable on Friday. Lopez only got onto the practice field Friday, while Melton was able to work Thursday and Friday. By not bringing up any reinforcements on Saturday, Arizona showed it’s at least encouraged by where both players stand ahead of the 1:05 PM PST kickoff at Levi’s Stadium.
That decision matters because NFL teams can elevate up to two practice squad players the day before a game, and those moves are usually reserved for shoring up injured spots. Arizona passed on those elevations for a second straight week, which points toward Lopez and Melton being available.
Lopez has been one of Arizona’s key interior pieces early in 2026, and Melton’s role becomes even more important with Will Johnson essentially ruled out for the season because of a neck injury.
The Cardinals will also get Garrett Williams back after the starting cornerback was cleared off the injury report, setting him up for his 2026 debut.
"He's a pro. He shows up, asks the right questions in the meetings, and obviously being out he's probably watched more film than just about any guy that's playing the game," Cardinals CB coach Zac Etheridge said of Williams.
"Preparing himself every single day. Just his knowledge and the way he goes out there. Seeing him step right in and not missing a beat."
San Francisco made its own roster moves Saturday, elevating defensive tackles Kevin Givens and Sebastian Valdez after Nick Bosa and James Thompson had already been ruled out. That could be a good sign for Mike Evans, who is questionable with a hip injury.
Even with the 49ers shuffling their front, Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur spent time praising San Francisco’s linebacker pairing of Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.
“They’re extremely talented. Their play style is elite.
They play well off each other. That’s like that camaraderie and the connection that those guys have from playing (together for) so many years," he said.
"It dates back to obviously drafting Fred and the development of Fred through that organization, bringing in a guy like (former 49ers LB) Kwon Alexander. Then when Kwon left, Dre really picked up right where Kwon left (off) and it’s been arguably the best tandem in football for some time. He went away for a year and (then) was getting back last year.
"A lot of respect for those two as players. If you guys saw the way they practiced, you’d have a lot of respect for them as well.”
