Cardinals Get Their Chance In A Shootout Detroit Cant Afford

As the Detroit Lions prepare to tackle the Arizona Cardinals, questions loom over both teams' defensive strategies and offensive potentials in a high-stakes Week 5 faceoff.

The Lions head into Week 5 with the kind of offensive firepower that can turn a game into a track meet, and that’s exactly what one Detroit insider expects when they face the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

Detroit Lions On SI’s John Maakaron laid out what to watch in the matchup, and his view starts with the offense. The Lions have already been pushed by Dan Campbell to put more points on the board, and while the unit has played well, it has also left too many opportunities on the field.

Detroit hasn’t been as explosive as it can be early on, but the team has found a way to use Jahmyr Gibbs correctly. Maakaron expects the second quarter of the season to bring more involvement for the rest of the weapons, with Jameson Williams singled out as a player who has gotten off to a slow start in the 2026 season.

The bigger problem in Detroit, though, is on the other side of the ball. Maakaron said the issues trace back to everything from Brad Holmes not properly addressing the secondary after first-round pick Terrion Arnold ran into legal troubles to a cornerback room that leans too heavily on undersized players.

He also didn’t mince words about defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, saying he is in over his head and that fans want him dismissed. The results have been ugly, with the defense sitting last in several statistical categories and looking, in Maakaron’s words, “un utter disarray.”

That defensive mess has put the spotlight on a lot of young players, but one name he highlighted on offense was Isaac TeSlaa. The rookie receiver has high upside, and while Jameson Williams has dealt with drops to start the year, TeSlaa brings a different skill set.

He’s not the quickest player off the line, but his size helps him win contested catches. With Arizona’s pass defense struggling, Maakaron thinks TeSlaa could see more targets, and he noted that Detroit’s front office and coaching staff are high on him.

If this one does turn into the shootout Maakaron expects, the Lions should have no trouble opening things up through the air. He believes Jared Goff will test Arizona’s secondary early and often, with Gibbs still getting his touches while Williams, TeSlaa, Amon-Ra St.

Brown and Sam LaPorta all producing meaningful numbers. He sees little reason to expect a lot of stops from either side.

Detroit is trying to reach its bye week at 3-2, and the pressure on the defense only keeps growing. Even if Arizona gets behind early, Maakaron still expects the Cardinals to stay in it because Sheppard’s defense has struggled to keep opponents out of the end zone. Still, he sided with the better quarterback in the end, taking the Lions 35-31 over Jacoby Brissett.

Marvin Harrison Jr. Drama Leaves Cardinals Offense In A Tough Spot

The Cardinals are suddenly trying to navigate another week without Marvin Harrison Jr., and the timing hardly helps an offense that has already had to keep adjusting around him. Harrison has hired agents Todd France and Tory Dandy, which adds another layer to a situation that has already stirred up plenty of trade buzz, even though he is not worried about those rumors. Now the bigger immediate issue is more practical than speculative: Arizona will be without him against the Lions.

There is a sense this could get resolved quickly, with the expectation around the league being that a deal will be in place for Harrison on Monday. Until then, the Cardinals are left filling a hole at wide receiver while their attention is split between what happens on the field this week and what happens next off it. For a team trying to settle its offense, that is about as awkward a setup as it gets. [Read more 🡒]

Marvin Harrison Jr. Trade Buzz Just Changed Arizonas Week

Marvin Harrison Jr.s week in Arizona has taken a sharp turn, with the Cardinals suddenly dealing with trade buzz around one of their most high-profile young players. No deal has been completed yet, but the chatter is real enough that other teams are doing their homework, and the situation has already shifted the conversation around a roster that had been expected to move forward with Harrison as a central piece.

The Cardinals are not actively shopping him, but interest has surfaced from teams such as the Colts and Texans, which adds another layer to the story as the front office weighs what comes next. For now, the only certainty is that Arizonas plans around Harrison are no longer routine, and the coming days could determine whether this remains background noise or turns into one of the weeks biggest developments. Marvin Harrison Jr. Trade Buzz Puts Cardinals In A Massive Spotlight

Trade chatter around Marvin Harrison Jr. has thrust the Cardinals into an unexpected spotlight, even as no deal has been finalized. Indianapolis has reportedly stepped away from talks after finding Arizonas price too steep, which tells you the Cardinals are not treating this like a routine move for a high-profile young receiver.

Houston has also been mentioned as a team in the mix, and that alone adds another layer of intrigue because of the possible connection to C.J. Stroud. For Arizona, the situation now centers on whether the asking price can be met and whether the buzz around Harrison leads to a deal at all, with no official confirmation yet from any side.
